Skimm'd while opening a new account…

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"How did people burn CDs? Like how did you just get a blank CD and put songs on it?" – A Gen Z teen who's making every millennial feel old AF.

LEVEL OFF

The Story

There's an update on drug overdose deaths across the US.

Remind me.

Last year, a record of more than 72,000 people died from drug overdoses – more than 49,000 of those were from opioids. Millions of Americans are addicted to opioids like OxyContin and fentanyl. President Trump declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency. And earlier this year, the surgeon general issued a public health advisory telling people to learn about and carry naloxone – a drug that can reverse the effects of these overdoses.

What's the latest?

Data show that the number of drug overdose deaths started leveling off late last year. The Health and Human Services secretary suggested that efforts to handle the opioid crisis (things like naloxone and access to medication-assisted treatment) are paying off.

So this is good news?

Yes, but people aren't getting their hopes up yet since this is just preliminary data. But the secretary said this could be "the end of the beginning." He also announced a new pilot program that'll help moms addicted to opioids and their kids. Meanwhile, Trump is expected to sign a bipartisan bill today that will expand access to treatment for opioid addicts.

The opioid epidemic is still a major, major issue in the US. But after years of overdose deaths increasing, this update could be a good sign.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when you're over your friend bailing on plans…

Putting my foot down. Yesterday, the Trump admin said it's making moves to punish Saudi officials involved in Jamal Khashoggi's death. That includes revoking their visas, and looking into the possibility of sanctions. These are the first major steps the admin's taken to punish the kingdom for his death. And Sec of State Mike Pompeo says they won't be "the last word on this matter." President Trump also had some words for Saudi Arabia. He called its cover-up of Khashoggi's death "the worst in the history of cover-ups."

What you'll be hearing about…

This report on law enforcement officers. It says that when these officers are the suspects in a civil rights case by the Justice Dept, it typically takes the feds about three years to file charges. And that's if it even files the charges – the report also says most misconduct cases submitted to the DOJ don't lead to that. Some of the reasons for the apparent holdup? A complicated process within the Justice Dept, the high legal standards for prosecuting cops, and the fact that people aren't putting pressure on the DOJ to speed things up. The dept reportedly says that "it takes time to put together an airtight prosecution" for these kinds of cases.

What to say while checking your lottery ticket…

I'm in a glass case of emotion. Yesterday was a rough one for markets around the world. Some of the reasons: Jamal Khashoggi's death, the US-China trade war, weak quarterly earnings reports in the US, Brexit, Italy's budget problems, and a slowing Chinese economy. Yikes. The good news? Wall Street recovered a bit after the Dow Jones dropped more than 500 points. Eyes are now on tech companies like Alphabet and Amazon, which hand in their quarterly report cards later this week.

Who people are thinking about…

Sandra Day O'Connor. Yesterday, the former Supreme Court justice (and first woman on the bench) announced she was diagnosed with dementia "some time ago." She retired in 2006 to take care of her husband who had Alzheimer's, and has become an advocate for the disease. Now she's revealing her diagnosis in an open letter, and saying that she'll no longer be part of "public life." Chief Justice John Roberts called her a "towering figure" in US history.

Who's making some apologies…

Megyn Kelly.

What to say to your friend who's scared of spiders…

That's your nightmare. Here's mine.
