QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Mindflix” — A headband some Netflix engineers recently created. It lets you choose your next binge watch just by moving your head and concentrating. Because sometimes the remote really is too far away.

RUMBLE IN THE POLITICAL JUNGLE

THE STORY

Last night, President Trump said ‘you’re fired’ to the acting attorney general after she said the Justice Department wouldn’t go along with his immigration ban.

REMIND ME ABOUT THE BAN AGAIN.

Last week, Trump signed an order that temporarily bans people from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the US. It also bans Syrian refugees indefinitely. And Trump said he’d give Christian refugees priority, making some people say ‘sounds a lot like a Muslim ban.’ Protests broke out across the country, and at least 100 travelers were detained at US airports over the weekend.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW?

Yesterday, the acting attorney general (who’s been warming the bench until Trump’s pick for the job is approved) said that under her watch, the Justice Dept wouldn’t defend the order against legal challenges in court. So Trump fired her. She’s already been replaced by a new guy who’s said he’ll defend Trump’s order.

WHAT’S EVERYONE ELSE SAYING?

Depends who you ask. Some State Department officials are prepping a doc that says Trump’s ban won’t make the country safer and will put a strain on foreign relations. To which the White House said ‘leave if you don’t like it.’ Meanwhile. former President Obama said through a spokesman that he “fundamentally disagrees” with the idea of religious discrimination and that protesters are right to speak out. But Trump thinks protesters - not his ban - are causing problems at airports.

Trump’s supporters are happy to see him moving quickly on the agenda he campaigned on, while Trump’s critics are saying ‘slowwww down.’ But no matter which side of the aisle you’re on, there are signs that moving quickly is leading to confusion within the federal government.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR MOM TELLS YOUR SHE’S BEEN WATCHING VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE...

Welcome to the 2000s, Mr. Baaaaanks. Yesterday, the Boy Scouts of America said it’ll start accepting transgender boys. For the first time ever. The organization’s been slowly changing its policies after getting a lot of side-eye for its treatment of the LGBT community. Back in 2013, it ended a longtime ban against openly gay scouts. Then in 2015, it lifted a ban on gay and lesbian troop leaders. But last year, the group kicked a transgender boy off one of its programs. And now it’s saying that using the gender on someone’s birth certificate to determine who gets accepted to the Scouts is “no longer sufficient.”

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GET ANOTHER TELEMARKETING CALL...

This again. Yesterday, drugmaker Mylan said the US gov’s looking into whether its EpiPen broke antitrust laws. Reminder: EpiPen’s the life-saving device that your friend with a nut allergy carries in her bag. Mylan’s been getting a lot of heat for jacking up the price of an EpiPen two-pack from around $100 to more than $600. After the Justice Department and other agencies looked into it, the company agreed to a $465 million settlement. And now the Federal Trade Commission’s looking into whether the drugmaker might have blocked competition from entering the market, which is not so legal. The company says that it did no such thing. This all comes at a time when many pharma companies have come under the microscope for hiking prices of drugs (cough, Martin Shkreli, cough). It also comes after President Trump said he’s not going to let drugmakers continue “getting away with murder” by charging high prices. It’s unclear what comes next for Mylan. But this is another bitter pill for the company’s rep.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR COUSIN WHO ALWAYS USES THE PUPPY FILTER...

Snap’s putting on a grown-up filter. In recent days, it came out that Snap Inc. — aka the artist formerly known as Snapchat — will host its IPO coming out party on the New York Stock Exchange. The Dancing Ghost’s expected to go public as early as March. And it’s hoping its big debut will value the company between $20 billion and $25 billion. That would make it the largest IPO since Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba went public in 2014. Not too bad for a company that reportedly turned down Facebook’s $3 billion takeover bid a few years ago. So far, Snap’s been keeping the IPO — which it filed for last year — on the DL. But later this week, to kick things off it’s expected to give the public its first glimpse at how much cash money the company has made. Investors are definitely adding this to their story.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR NEIGHBOR SPENDS A LOT OF MONEY ON A NEW HOME SECURITY SYSTEM...

That’s Astro-nomical. Yesterday, Major League Baseball threw the St. Louis Cardinals a curve ball over somedrama they had with the Houston Astros. The Cardinals have to pay a $2 million fine after a former team exec hacked into the Astros’ database a few years ago to snoop on things like potential trades and scouting reports for new players. That’s about as bad as a fine can get in the MLB. Last year, the exec was sent to prison. And yesterday the MLB permanently banned him from working in baseball. The Cardinals also have to give the Astros two of their draft picks for this year. Foul ball.
