  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Wisconsin" - A Google report on the most common word that people don't know how to spell...in Wisconsin. Home is where the hart is.

GREEN LIGHT, RED LIGHT

The Story

President Trump's expected to say 'au revoir' to the Paris climate deal.

What's that again?

The global agreement to try and save Captain Planet. Scientists say global warming is caused in large part by things like cars and factories burning coal and oil, and releasing greenhouse gases. The international community's been trying for decades to find a solution. In 2015, almost every country in the world finally shook on a deal that requires everyone to cut carbon emissions in order to keep global temperatures down.

So what now?

Trump says he'll announce today whether the US -- one of the largest polluters in the world -- is leaving the deal. US officials say he'll probably pull out. Trump campaigned on a promise to make this happen, saying that the deal kills jobs in the coal and oil industries.

What are other people saying?

Critics say that by pulling out, the US risks putting global climate patterns and international relations on thin glacial ice. Major businesses, including Apple and Tesla, say the deal will create more jobs in clean energy. And even energy companies like Exxon Mobil think it's important for the US to keep a seat at the negotiating table. But supporters say this is Trump keeping his campaign promises. And some on Team Trump have said the deal is unnecessary, since they believe humans aren't primarily responsible for global warming.

If the US taps out of the deal, it would become one of just three countries in the entire world to do so. And many are worried that other countries might play copycat. All of which could make the deal's forecast cloudy with a chance of falling apart.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What people are talking about...

Ohio. Yesterday, the state sued five drugmakers for putting its massive drug epidemic into overdrive. In recent years, the number of people in the US overdosing on opioids (think: painkillers like OxyContin) has skyrocketed. And the whole problem gets worse when people run out of prescription painkillers and turn to other drugs like heroin. Tens of thousands of people have died in recent years, and Ohio's been especially hard hit. Now the state's saying that major US drugmakers are to blame. Ohio's Attorney General says that the companies use marketing tactics that hype the benefits of their drugs but misrepresent how addictive they can be. Some of the companies say 'not true.' The others aren't saying anything at all. Ohio's just the latest place to go after the pharma industry for its role in the opioid crisis. Cities like Chicago and states like Mississippi have sued for similar reasons. Now Ohio wants the drug companies to drop the deceptive marketing and pay some damages.

What to say when your co-worker comes late and leaves early every day...

Raising some eyebrows. Yesterday, the White House said that it's given at least 16 staffers ethics waivers since President Trump took office. Reminder: President Trump campaigned on a promise to "drain the swamp" and rid Washington of so much influence by lobbyists. He's also gotten a lot of side eye from ethics experts for potential conflicts of interests related to his family's many biz ties. Now there's this. The waivers let certain staffers work on issues that could affect their former clients or employers. Aka some former lobbyists now have a thumbs up to help shape Trump's policies on issues they used to push. The White House says it's done everything possible to help staffers avoid conflicts of interest and only given out a "limited" number of these waivers. Critics say this is a huge red flag.

What to say to your friend who always watches the ball drop on NYE...

Kathy Griffin won't be there this year. Yesterday, CNN fired the comedian from her New Year's Eve co-hosting gig. This came a day after photos from a shoot were released showing Griffin holding up a fake severed head...of President Trump. Cue outrage from both sides of the aisle. Trump said she "should be ashamed of herself." Chelsea Clinton said 'this is not funny.' Griffin said "I was wrong." CNN still gave her the boot. She had been the yin to Anderson Cooper's yang during CNN's NYE broadcast since 2007. Not anymore. And in other news about your TV guide, former Fox News star Megyn Kelly's warming up her anchor chair for NBC. Her new "60 Minutes"-style show starts Sunday.

What to say when you realize you wore the same pants three times this week...

Deja vu. Basketball's feeling the same. Tonight, the Cleveland Cavaliers face off against the Golden State Warriors in Game 1 of the NBA finals. For the third year in a row. Back in 2015, the Warriors won. Last year, it was the Cavs. Now everyone's watching to see which team will go for two. No pressure. Meanwhile, LeBron James is dealing with more than just prepping for the big game. Yesterday, someone spray painted the n-word on his house in Los Angeles. Police are investigating, including looking into whether it's a hate crime. James said no matter who you are, "being black in America is tough."

SKIMM STUDIES

When President Trump took office, he made it clear that he wanted to move quickly to repeal Obamacare, and replace it with something better. theSkimm teamed up with YouGov to survey millennial women on where they stand on the healthcare debate. Here's what we heard.

PS: we want to make it easier for you to be in the know about issues driving the national conversation. That means healthcare. More on that next week.
