Skimm'd while prepping to split the brunch check

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Not everything from the 90s needs a reboot" - A Twitter user shooting down the idea of a Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt reunion now that she and Justin Theroux have called it quits. Umm agree to disagree.

AFTERMATH

The Story

We're learning more details about this week's shooting in Parkland, FL.

Remind me.

Earlier this week, a 19-year-old gunman pulled the fire alarm at a high school to draw students out of their classrooms. He killed at least 17 and injured more than a dozen. The gunman was a former student who had been expelled for disciplinary reasons. He was armed with a semiautomatic rifle. After more than an hour at large, he was taken into custody.

What's the latest?

The suspect confessed to the shooting and was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and denied bond. Meanwhile, it came out that he was a member of a local white nationalist group. Last year, the FBI was contacted about a YouTube comment posted by a user with the same name that said "I'm going to be a professional school shooter."

What are people saying?

One surviving student told lawmakers to take action on gun control, saying "we're children. You guys are the adults." Democrats are asking for tougher gun legislation. President Trump says his administration is working on ways to better secure schools and "tackle the difficult issue of mental health." But didn't mention guns or gun control. Some Republicans said guns weren't to blame (see: this and this).

This shooting is one of the deadliest in modern US history. And, less than 50 days into 2018, it's already far from the first school shooting this year.

PEOPLE MORE FIT THAN YOU

The Olympics are still going strong. And Skimm HQ is still obsessed. Here are some key things to know...

Markus Schairer: The Austrian snowboarder who broke his neck in a crash yesterday. But still managed to get up and cross the finish line all on his own.

Nathan Chen: The US national champion figure skater that was expected to kill it at the Olympics, but fell flat in the team rounds and in last night's short program. He's got another shot on Saturday. But until then, the internet is ready to give him a hug.

Snow volleyball: Pretty self explanatory. It may or may not be the newest sport at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Not mad about it.

Gus Kenworthy: He's hitting the slopes this weekend for slopestyle skiing. He's also one of the only openly gay US athletes in PyeongChang. And we all want to be part of his and Adam Rippon's bromance.

PS: We don't want you to miss any of the big deal Olympic events. So we made you a calendar. And all this week, our in-app audio series is about crazy Olympic moments, from Tonya Harding to the Miracle on Ice. Download theSkimm app here. (Android, we'll be with you soon)

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when the line for food is longer than it took you to get there...

I'm out. Yesterday, Ethiopia's prime minister resigned. For months, anti-gov protesters have been taking to the streets calling for political change. The gov has a habit of arresting opposition leaders - claiming they're terrorists - and using national security as an excuse to take opponents down. In recent weeks, protesters have been putting pressure on the gov to release prisoners. The gov said 'ok, we'll let a few thousand go.' But it wasn't enough. Now, in a surprising announcement, the PM is stepping out of the limelight and in the hopes that'll help fix the turmoil there. Meanwhile, Australia's deputy prime minister is putting up his OOO after it came out that he had an affair with a former staffer. Last week, details about the affair came out. Including that the former staffer is pregnant. Parliament was pissed and tried to get the deputy PM to resign. Now, he's taking a nice little vacation for himself. The country's PM also said ministers can't have sex with their staffers. Subtle.

What to say when have a job interview...

Suit up. Yesterday, the ACLU filed a lawsuit to block an Ohio abortion law. Last year, Ohio Governor John Kasich signed a bill that said doctors can't perform an abortion if the fetus has or may have Down syndrome. It's supposed to go into effect next month. Supporters of the bill say it protects victims against discrimination. But now the ACLU's saying 'hold up, this law is unconstitutional.' And violates the right to freedom and privacy. Next steps for it are unclear. In other news on the docket, Planned Parenthood is suing the Trump administration for cutting off funds for a national teen pregnancy program. The program started under the Obama admin to help lower teen pregnancy rates and help at-risk teens with things like sex ed. But the Department of Health and Humans Services is closing up its wallet. Now, Planned Parenthood is teaming up with other local gov and healthcare groups to sue. They say that the admin is illegally ending the program based on their beliefs and not on science. No word from the HHS Dept.

What to say to your friend who drives a Prius...

Hear about this? A new study says your soap is just as bad for air pollution as your car. Yes, really. As cars get more green and clean, they give off less emissions. But air pollution is still a problem. So scientists looked into products like toiletries, paint, and perfume. When you use these products, the chemicals evaporate into the air and eventually make its way outside. Because most of us aren't Bubble Boy. The chemicals become a lot more dangerous once they hit sunlight and go through a chemical reaction that adds to the air pollution problem. Now scientists say this shows that air pollution isn't just an outdoor problem.

What to say to your friends seeing "Black Panther"...

Can I join? Three more states are reportedly joining California to look into health insurance company Aetna. Earlier this week, it came out that a former medical director at Aetna reportedly said he didn't look at people's medical records before deciding whether they got coverage. Employee of the year. CA said 'not OK' and is looking into it. Now, Washington, Colorado and Connecticut are reportedly doing the same. And are hoping to get some answers on how the third largest insurance company in the country deals with its millions of customers.

What to say when your SO books a surprise trip for the long weekend...

That came out of nowhere...just like Amy Schumer's wedding.
