Skimm'd with deflated balloons

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"MacCoin" - McDonald's has a limited edition currency for its 50th anniversary of the Big Mac. Yes, it's an actual coin. No, no one needed it.

THINGS HAPPENING THIS WEEK

Paul Manafort Trial

The Story

Today, President Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort is heading to court.

For Russia stuff?

Not exactly. Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating Russia's attack on the 2016 election and whether Trump's campaign colluded. During the ongoing investigation, he stumbled upon Manafort's allegedly sketchy financial past. Think: things like allegedly using offshore accounts to avoid taxes on millions of dollars...that he apparently got as a consultant for pro-Russia Ukrainians. Cue: house raids, charges, and now his day in court.

This is the first trial to come out of Mueller's investigation - which Trump has called a "witch hunt." This trial is not about Russian meddling or campaign collusion. But the outcome could change how people perceive the investigation...either validating the special counsel's efforts or undermining them.

3D-Printed Guns

The Story

Several states are suing the US government to stop people from being able to download 3D-printed guns tomorrow.

Explain.

A few years ago, a young anarchist made blueprints so people could use 3D printers to make...guns. The State Dept shut it down. And he sued the gov for violating his free speech and gun rights. Last month, his company settled with the Trump admin. They agreed the blueprints can officially go back online tomorrow.

What are people saying?

The co is 3-Deep in champagne over what it calls a win for free speech. Critics say this will give people like terrorists, felons, domestic abusers, and others who could fail background checks easier access to guns. Also, that the guns don't have serial numbers - making them untraceable. And that these guns might not get flagged by things like metal detectors - since they're printed in plastic. Now, at least eight states are suing to prevent the blueprints from going live.

At one point this year, it looked like America was ready for more gun control on the federal level. Now, it's looking like people will be allowed to make DIY guns.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when a fly gets into the office...

Go away. CBS decided it's not ready to say that. ICYMI, six women came forward to accuse CBS CEO Les Moonves of sexual misconduct in the '80s, '90s, and '00s. He says he may have made women "uncomfortable by making advances" but that he never misused his position of power. Yesterday, the co's board of directors said it's lining up outside counsel to investigate the claims. In the meantime, Moonves can keep going to work. Speaking of things under the microscope, FEMA. For the past few years, the agency's former personnel chief allegedly hired college friends and women he met online. And transferred some of these women to other departments so that his friends could have sex with them. The personnel chief resigned during an internal investigation. FEMA's administrator called the allegations "deeply disturbing" and promised to expand the investigation beyond just this one official.

What has people on edge...

India. Yesterday, officials there released a draft list of citizens in the state of Assam, which borders Bangladesh. Four million people were left off the list - including many who are Bengali-speaking Muslims. Officials put the list together by asking residents to provide docs showing they or their family lived in India before the '70s (when Bangladesh claimed independence and many refugees made their way to Assam). The gov says residents don't need to worry and that those not on the list can appeal. But Assam has a history of violence against Muslims. And many fear this means they will be deported, detained, or left without any rights.

What people are talking about...

The fatal shooting of a black man in Minneapolis. Yesterday, a prosecutor said he won't charge two police officers in the death of Thurman Blevins. Last month, the 31-year-old was fatally shot by police - who were responding to a 911 call about a man firing a gun in the air. Over the weekend, police released footage of the shooting. Blevins can be seen fleeing from officers and saying "please don't shoot." At one point, he appeared to pull an object - which police said was a gun - out of his shorts, and police officers opened fire. Now, a prosecutor says the officers were justified and won't face criminal charges. Blevins's family deny that he was a threat. A protest is planned for this afternoon.

What to say when you forget to bring lunch...

Someone feed me. A bunch of kangaroos in Australia's capital are looking for food - which has become scarce because of tough weather conditions. But this means danger for the kangaroos because their feeding time is the same as rush hour.

What to say when you can't stop fighting with your SO...

Is the end near? Yesterday, MoviePass users had problems with the app. Again. And its parent co's stock took a hit.

What to say when you're ready to be OOO...

Apparently Anna Wintour felt the same. Hi, Beyoncé.

THING TO KNOW

Bigfoot erotica

As weird as it sounds. And a legitimate issue in one Virginia congressional race. The Dem candidate says her Republican opponent is into the freaky furry stuff. He says 'not true' but that he has written about Bigfoot. The world says 'when did politics get soooo weird?'
