QUOTE OF THE DAY

“A fun, interactive way to shake salt” - The maker of a new ‘smart’ salt shaker that doubles as a speaker. Because the old version really needed to be disrupted.

TRÈS PRESIDENTIAL

THE STORY

Emmanuel Macron is France’s next president.

TELL ME MORE.

Yesterday, the 39-year-old moderate beat far-right candidate Marine Le Pen. By a lot. That sound you hear is the EU breathing a sigh of relief. Macron ran a pro-EU, pro-immigrant campaign. Le Pen wanted to pull France out of the EU and close the country’s borders. It would have been devastating for the EU to lose France, a founding member and one of its largest economies, almost a year post-Brexit. After that shocking UK vote, and President Trump’s win in the US, many were wondering if Le Pen would be the next populist candidate to pull off an upset. Not this time.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Over the weekend, Macron’s campaign emails were hacked and widely shared by fake social media accounts. It’s unclear who did this, but his campaign blamed Russia - which backed Le Pen - for trying to sway the election. Sounds familiar.

NOW WHAT?

France has parliamentary elections next month. In order for Macron to push his agenda, he’ll need to have control of parliament. But since his party is so young (think: just over a year old), he may have to form a coalition with like-minded lawmakers from other parties. And it’s unclear if they’ll play political ball.

Macron is about to become France’s youngest president ever. He’s also about to be in charge of a country that’s struggling with slow economic growth, terrorist threats, and a wave of migrants and refugees. Bonne chance.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO WORKS AT AN NGO…

Heard about this? Over the weekend, Boko Haram released dozens of schoolgirls that it kidnapped back in 2014. Boko Haram is the Islamic militant group that’s been terrorizing Nigeria for years. Three years ago, the group grabbed international headlines when it kidnapped almost 300 schoolgirls. The Nigerian government has been trying - and failing - to rescue those girls ever since. Last year, the government, with some help from groups like the Red Cross, negotiated the release of more than 20 of them. Now, more than 80 of the girls have been released in exchange for five Boko Haram prisoners. More than 100 girls are still in captivity. The government says it will “do everything within its power” to bring them home.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT...

Penn State. On Friday, 18 students from the same fraternity were charged in connection with the death of a pledge. Back in February, 19-year-old Timothy Piazza drank a lot of alcohol at a Beta Theta Pi pledge party. He ended up getting so drunk that he fell down the basement stairs, and hit his head multiple times throughout the night. Surveillance video shows other members walking over Piazza while he was unconscious and taking pictures of him. But no one called for help...for almost 12 hours. Someone finally called 911 the next morning, and Piazza was taken to the hospital. He died the next day. Add this to the list of reasons why Penn State’s rep has taken a serious hit recently. Now, 18 students and the fraternity have been charged with things like involuntary manslaughter and hazing. The fraternity’s also banned from campus. And the university has put some new rules in place, like a ban on liquor and kegs.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU BUY YOUR INTERN COFFEE AFTER SHE FILES YOUR EXPENSES…

You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. Over the weekend, Kushner Companies tried to woo Chinese investors by offering them US visas. Kushner Companies is the real estate firm that used to be run by Jared Kushner - President Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law. Just before joining the White House, Kushner stepped down as CEO and sold off some of his biz investments to avoid conflicts of interest. Side note: for years, the US government has tried to bring foreign investments into the US by offering special immigrant visas. Over the weekend, Kushner’s sister Nicole Kushner Meyer was at a Chinese investor event in Beijing. She pushed this visa deal to try to convince them to buy into a new project. She also name dropped Jared during the presentation. Red flag, since her brother has played a large role in talks between the Trump administration and the Chinese government. Critics say this shows the family business is taking advantage of his connections. The company said ‘our bad,’ and that mentioning Jared wasn’t intended to “lure investors.” Kushner Companies is one of many Trump family businesses that’s keeping ethics experts up at night with similar potential conflicts of interest.

THING TO KNOW

Always Dreaming: Not your middle school away message. The name of the horse that left the others in the dust at the Kentucky Derby over the weekend. Giddy up.
