QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The Dark Overlord” - The name of the hacker who watches too much “Star Wars” and who also apparently leaked some of the new season of “Orange Is The New Black.” Netflix and no chill.

RSV-PHILIPPINES

THE STORY

President Trump is cozying up to Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. This is raising lots of eyebrows.

WHY?

For years, the US and the Philippines have been military and economic allies. Then last year, Duterte was elected on a promise to crack down on the country’s massive drug trade. Turns out, “crackdown” means letting police gun down thousands of people suspected of trafficking or using drugs. That put Philippine-US relations on ice while President Obama was in office. Now, Team Trump says the US needs more support from Asian allies to deal with North Korea. So this weekend, Trump dusted off the welcome mat and invited Duterte for a White House visit.

REMIND ME WHAT’S GOING ON WITH NORTH KOREA.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with the good hair has been testing different kinds of missiles for months, including one over the weekend that failed. But this still has the international community on edge. Yesterday, Trump said the situation in North Korea ‘can’t continue’ and suggested military action is on the table.

The US would very much like to prevent a nuclear conflict with North Korea. Yesterday’s invitation to Duterte signals that Trump is willing to do pretty much anything - including befriend a problematic leader - to make it happen.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU SUBMIT YOUR WORK EXPENSES RIGHT BEFORE THE DEADLINE…

Phew. Congress is saying the same. Last night, lawmakers finally reached a budget deal to avoid a government shutdown. This comes after weeks of negotiations that went down to the wire - and after passing a temporary deal to give themselves a one-week extension. The new deal doesn’t include funding for President Trump’s US-Mexico border wall, but does boost spending for border security. Congress has until Friday to officially vote on the deal. Meanwhile, over at the Environmental Protection Agency, officials are saying ‘climate change schlimate change.’ Reminder: EPA head Scott Pruitt doesn’t think humans are a primary contributor to global warming. On Friday, the agency took down most info about climate change science from its website. The agency said it’s updating the site “to reflect the views” of its leadership.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR EX SHOWS UP TO YOUR BIRTHDAY DRINKS…

You gotta go. Over the weekend, the Turkish gov told nearly 4,000 public workers they were out of a job. The government says these people had potential terrorist ties and were a national security threat. Last year, part of Turkey’s military tried - and failed - to overthrow the government. Ever since, Turkey’s President Erdogan has been on a power-grabbing spree. More than 100,000 people (think: teachers, journalists, military members) have been arrested or kicked out of their jobs for alleged anti-government ties. Then last month, Turks voteto change the constitution to give wayyyy more power to the prez. Now, Erdogan’s celebrating that win with another round of crackdowns. The government also shut down access to Wikipedia, saying it is a national security threat. Apparently no one told Erdogan that he can edit his own page.

WEIRD SH*T ABOUT RUSSIA

We’ve been trying this new thing. It’s pretty self explanatory. Over the next few days, we’ll tell you WTF is going on with Russia. You can also read it here ahead of time. First, a little background…

  • Last year, the US intelligence community took the mic and said ‘zee Russians interfered in the presidential election.’ And they did this in part to help President Trump win

  • The FBI and CIA say the Russian gov directed cyberattacks that hacked the DNC and Clinton campaign’s emails. The stolen docs were then leaked to WikiLeaks. Russia also created armies of social media bots to spread fake news. Note: there’s no evidence Russia manipulated voting machines on election day

  • Now, the FBI and Congress are investigating whether Trump’s team colluded in any way with the Russian gov while this was happening

These investigations are ongoing and could take a loooong time before they’re done. So we Skimm’d the whole thing for you: the key players, and what we know so far.
