Skimm'd while watching "Insecure"

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Avocados are tasteless green mush there I said it" - A Twitter user who's not afraid to start some controversy. Now what about kale? Asking for a friend.

ONE YEAR LATER

The Story

A year after white supremacists made headlines in Charlottesville, VA, they went for round two in DC.

Back up.

Last year, they showed up in Charlottesville carrying Confederate and Nazi flags to protest the removal of a Confederate statue. And yelled "you will not replace us." Violence broke out between them and counterprotesters. And 32-year-old Heather Heyer was killed when a man drove a car into a crowd. President Trump initially said "both sides" were to blame for the violence. After getting a lot of flak, he eventually called out the white supremacists.

What's the latest?

White supremacists are back. They showed up in DC for a rally called Unite the Right 2 - a "white civil rights" protest. About 400 people were expected to show up. Only dozens came. They were met by thousands of counterprotesters who yelled things like "Go home, Nazis."

Anything else?

People also came out in Charlottesville this weekend to denounce racism and hate, and lay flowers at a memorial for Heyer. Trump marked the anniversary by saying he condemns "all types of racism and acts of violence." People are wondering why he's not being specific. Again.

Last year, the deadly rally in Charlottesville exposed a mobilized and emboldened group of racist, anti-Semitic Americans. Since that time, half of Americans apparently think racial relations have gotten worse. Thousands of people showed up this weekend to tell white supremacists that they are not the majority.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when someone shares your hot take...

Are we best friends now? The nations surrounding the Caspian Sea know the feeling. Yesterday, Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan shook on a way to divide up the sea's resources. Everyone wants a slice because people think Prince Caspian holds a lot of oil and gas reserves. 48 billion barrels, to be precise. They haven't finalized the details, but this move helps relieve tension between the neighbors. Meanwhile, nearby Turkey isn't exactly feeling the int'l love. Last week, President Trump said he was doubling the amount of steel and aluminum tariffs on Turkey. And said relations with the country are "not good" right now. Turkey and the US have long been allies - and the US has a key military base there. But the beef between the two has gotten beefier since Trump called Turkey out for refusing to release an American pastor. The US says the pastor's charges are bogus. Turkey says 'not so.' Turkey's currency is saying 'where did the good times go.'

What to say when you hear Brooks Koepka is the PGA champ...

Fore the win. The University of Maryland is also making sports headlines, but for all the wrong reasons. Over the weekend, the Terps put their head football coach on paid leave. Earlier this year, 19-year-old offensive lineman Jordan McNair died of heatstroke weeks after reportedly showing serious signs of distress during a workout. Since then, a report came out accusing the coach of fostering a toxic and abusive environment. Think: throwing objects at players, encouraging unhealthy eating habits, and even verbally abusing a player who passed out during a workout. The university says it's investigating all this. And that it's put the head coach and other athletic staff members on leave.

Who's paying up...

Monsanto. A jury ordered the company - known for agricultural and garden products - to pay $289 million to a man who claims their product gave him terminal cancer. The man was a groundskeeper at a school and used Monsanto's weed killer (the most popular on the market) on the regular. He says this caused him to develop non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, with lesions all over his body. Monsanto says 'not true' and claims that studies show the product is safe. But a jury disagreed. Thousands of people have filed lawsuits against the company for similar claims - but this was the first to go to trial.

What people are talking about...

Airport security. This weekend, a man who worked at Seattle's main airport stole an empty plane and crashed it. The man - who died in the crash - worked as a baggage handler and ground service agent for years, and had clearance to access the plane. The incident is raising questions about airport security and how to prevent something like this from happening again.

What to say when you pass by a cute dog...

Must touch. Yesterday, NASA sent a probe to touch the sun. The goal? Learn more about the sun's atmosphere and solar wind. Scientists want more data on space weather - since it could reportedly lead to events more dangerous than Hurricanes Katrina, Harvey, and Sandy combined. May the force be with you.

THING TO KNOW

Squid

Not the calamari kind. It's a bad motorcycle driver. Think: no helmet, weaving, driving recklessly. You'll want to avoid them while on your summer road trip. Want to make sure you can deal with all SOS moments on the road? Learn more here.
