  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"The Uranus Examiner" - The name of a new Missouri newspaper. Just gonna leave that there.

FLORENCE

The Story

The US's southeast coast is dealing with a major hurricane.

What's the latest?

There are states of emergency in the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia, and Maryland. Last night, Hurricane Florence went from a Category 2 storm to a Category 1 storm. Meaning: wind speeds have died down a little, but are still really effing dangerous with 90-mph winds. Officials warn the storm is especially dangerous because of how wide and relatively slowly it's moving - which could cause catastrophic flooding. More than 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate. More than 1,000 flights have been canceled. Tens of thousands of people have already lost power - and millions more are at risk. The eye of the hurricane is expected to make landfall today.

Why does this keep happening?

It's hurricane season. Hurricanes rely on warm water to form and keep going, and this time of year is when they tend to get especially out of hand. Scientists think global warming isn't helping. This year, Florence is the first major Atlantic hurricane to hit the US. Last year was an especially deadly season.

I remember.

Speaking of last year's storms, Puerto Rico's governor recently said nearly 3,000 people died as a result of Hurricane Maria. But yesterday, President Trump cast doubt on the updated death toll. Trump has called his admin's response to Maria an "unsung success." He blames the revised figures on Democrats trying to make him look "as bad as possible" - but is getting pushback from both sides of the aisle. Meanwhile, the head of FEMA is being investigated over how he's been traveling on taxpayers' dime.

Florence is already reminding people of last year's Hurricane Harvey because of how damaging the flooding might be. It's on track to be the most dangerous hurricane North Carolina has seen in decades - and nearby states are on watch, too. Stay safe.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when you finally find a dress for your friend's wedding...

I choose you. Yesterday, New Yorkers hit the polls for state primary races. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) beat out Miranda Hobbes aka Cynthia Nixon (D) for the Dem ticket. And Letitia James (D) won the Dem nod for attorney general - if she wins, she'll be the first black woman to become NY's AG. Meanwhile, congressional leaders shook hands on a plan to avoid a gov shutdown and keep the gov's lights on until early December. It puts President Trump's border wall on the backburner until after the midterms, so TBD if he signs off on it. Meanwhile, the Senate Judiciary Committee delayed its vote on whether to recommend SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh to the rest of the crew (read: Senate). This happened as Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) says she passed confidential info she got on Kavanaugh to the feds. The committee's expected to vote on him next week - and then it's up to the Senate to give him the thumbs up.

What to say when your cousin sneaks out of a family event...

Going rogue. Yesterday, Turkey's central bank ignored President Erdogan and bumped up its interest rate. ICYMI, Turkey's economy has been having a rough year. Its currency has fallen about 40% against the dollar since January. Inflation's at a 15-year high. Some international investors have been pulling their money. On top of that, Erdogan - who's been making power moves that people worry threaten the economy - has called interest rates "the mother and father of all evil." So no, he's not a fan. And investors have been worried about what the central bank would do under political pressure. But the bank is saying 'think we're the experts here' and is lowering rates anyway. Hear that? It's the sound of the lira breathing a sigh of relief.

What has people on edge...

Massachusetts. Yesterday, three towns there experienced dozens of explosions and fires due to gas leaks. One person died and at least 10 others were injured. Thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate as a precaution.

What to say when you hear men are apparently more chatty than women...

Shh. Jeff Bezos has an announcement.

What to say when someone compliments your outfit...

This old thing?
