  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"All it is, is a hairdryer" - A British grandmother on getting passing cars to slow down by pretending she has a speed gun. Mind, blow dried.

TESTING, TESTING

The Story

Yesterday, former FBI director James Comey testified to a Senate panel. It was the most exciting show on C-Span in years.

How did we get here?

Last month, President Trump abruptly fired Comey, who was leading the FBI's Trump-Russia investigation. Trump later said he had "this Russia thing" on the brain when he showed Comey the door. Comey left behind a paper trail of memos detailing convos he had with the President. Including one where Comey says Trump asked him to 'let go' of an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's connections to Russia. Yesterday, the Senate asked Comey about that.

What did Comey say?

That he wrote these memos because he worried Trump "might lie" about their convos. That he asked a friend to leak the contents of the memo about Flynn to the press, hoping that it would lead to a special counsel taking over the investigation (it did). That he interpreted Trump's suggestion to drop the Flynn investigation as a "direction." And that he believes Trump fired him because the Russia investigation "created pressure."

Is that all?

Nope. Remember that time the FBI looked into Hillary Clinton's private email server? And Comey publicly announced that he wouldn't recommend charges against her? He says he did that because of that time former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Bill Clinton hung out on a tarmac. Comey felt this put the credibility of the investigation at risk, so he stepped up to take the mic.

What did Trump say?

That Comey's testimony is proof that he never tried to "impede the investigation." That he never tried to get Comey to stop investigating anyone. And that Comey made "unauthorized disclosures" by helping leak details of his convos with Trump to the press.

One thing Comey didn't say? Whether he thinks Trump was trying to obstruct justice. The new special counsel gets to figure that one out.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when your rival co-worker starts going after the same promotion as you...

Tough competition Yesterday, the UK hit the polls in a parliamentary election. Prime Minister Theresa May didn't get the majority she was hoping for and now the country's dealing with a big political mess. Earlier this year, May decided this election should happen early...three years early. NBD. The winning party chooses who becomes Prime Minister - and Negotiator-in-chief - for Brexit talks. Those are supposed to start later this month. May hoped to walk into the divorce with a big thumbs up from the Brits. Plot twist: the opposition picked up more seats than May was expecting and her party doesn't have an outright majority anymore. This is called a 'hung parliament.' Her rival says she should step down. She's saying 'not happening.' Now, it's looking like May will have to team up with smaller parties to get things done - which could force her to soften her Brexit terms. Meanwhile, it could delay Brexit talks altogether. Not part of the plan.

What to say when your friend suggests going to $1 oyster happy hour...

Yes please. Yahoo shareholders are saying the same. Yesterday they gave their seal of approval to sell Yahoo's core business (Internet, search, email) to Verizon for about $4.5 billion. This deal is nearly a year in the making. Last year, Verizon said it would snatch up The 'Hoo for nearly $5 billion. Then Yahoo said 'oh btw we've been hacked. Twice.' So the company agreed to lower the price tag. Now, it's official. Verizon - which also owns AOL - is going to combine AOL and Yahoo into a new digital company. Called Oath. Oh, and when the merger's done and done, Verizon reportedly plans on telling more than 2,000 of Yahoo and AOL's roughly 14,000 employees 'you're fired.' Nice welcome gift.

What people are watching...

Yemen. The country's going through a major cholera outbreak. And yesterday the World Health Organization said there are now more than 100,000 suspected cases there. Yemen was already in crisis mode before this happened. Back in 2015, Houthi rebels (backed by Iran) took over the Presidential palace. Ever since, they've been fighting with gov forces (backed by Saudi Arabia). The conflict's left Yemen's food and healthcare systems in shambles and the country is on the verge of famine. Now, thousands of people have gotten cholera, a deadly but treatable disease that comes from drinking contaminated water. Nearly 800 people have died in just over a month - which is unusually fast. Health officials say there could be hundreds of thousands more cases in the next few weeks. And they're pushing for a ceasefire so they can get in to help.

What to say when you hear these birth control pills are being recalled...

Oh baby. A new study suggests that fetuses might be able to recognize faces from inside their mom's belly. A team of scientists projected lights arranged into certain patterns - like an upside down triangle that kinda resembles a face - into women's wombs during the third trimester. And then used ultrasounds to see how the fetus reacted. They found that the fetuses go more gaga for images that look like faces than images that don't. Baby's day in.
