QUOTE OF THE DAY

“My worst nightmare…is that being played at my funeral” - Miley Cyrus on “Wrecking Ball.” She apparently regrets swinging around naked in the music video. Turns out, she CAN stop.

DID YOU GET THAT MEMO?

The Story

Yesterday, the cup of Russian drama runneth over. It came out that President Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to stop looking into Michael Flynn.

Who’s he again?

The retired three-star Army general who was Trump’s first national security adviser. He was forced to resign earlier this year after misleading the White House about conversations he’d had with the Russian ambassador to the US. Meanwhile, the FBI has been investigating whether Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to interfere in the presidential election.

Then what?

Last week, Trump abruptly fired Comey. At first, the White House said he did this at the recommendation of his Attorney General and deputy AG, who felt Comey mishandled the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server last year. Then, Trump said that he’d already decided to fire Comey before getting these recs, and had “this Russia thing” on the brain when he made the call.

So what’s the latest?

Turns out, a day after Flynn resigned, Trump asked Comey to drop the FBI investigation into Flynn, saying “I hope you can let this go.” Instead, Trump suggested Comey should investigate the reporters who had published leaked information. All of this is according to a memo Comey wrote after the meeting. The White House says Trump never asked Comey “to end any investigation.”

This is raising some serious questions as to whether Trump obstructed justice. Exactly what the White House needed after what’s been a chaotic few days.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when your friend asks what time you can get drinks after work…

I’ll be free earlier than expected. Just like Chelsea Manning. Today, the soldier is getting released from military prison...more than 20 years early. Manning is the ex-Army intelligence analyst who used to go by Bradley. Back in 2010, she leaked classified docs to WikiLeaks. Manning said the leak was meant to spark reform in the military. But the US gov said it sparked the word ‘treason,’ and she was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Manning later announced that she identifies as a woman, and started receiving hormone treatments from the US military while in prison. Earlier this year, then-President Obama announced Manning would be released early out of concern that her sentence was excessive compared to similar cases. Once she’s released today, Manning will remain an active-duty soldier with access to benefits like health care, but she won’t be paid. And her legal battles aren’t over - Manning’s still appealing her conviction, which means her case will be tied up in courts for years.

What to say to your hypochondriac friend…

Bad news. Ebola may be back. According to the World Health Organization, three people have died because of a recent outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ebola’s the deadly virus that starts out like the flu but can lead to internal and external bleeding and hemorrhaging. There’s no approved vaccine or cure. In 2014, the worst-ever Ebola outbreak hit West Africa and more than 11,000 people died. Others from around the world were infected or potentially exposed. And your politically incorrect high school classmate wore this costume for Halloween. Now, the Democratic Republic of Congo is dealing with an outbreak of its own. So far, there are almost 20 suspected cases, and health officials are identifying anyone who might have been in contact with the virus.

What to say to your co-worker who is clearly on the struggle bus...

It’s OK, so is Twitter. Yesterday, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said he’s going back to his roots, and rejoining the company six years after he left. The Little Blue Bird has had a rough couple of years, with jobs cuts and difficulty adding users. This announcement makes Stone the second of the OG Twitter clan to come back and help revive the company. In 2015, co-founder Jack Dorsey also returned to Twitter after some time away. In a blog post, Stone said he’s not coming back to replace anyone, but rather he’s going to “shape the experience internally.” The post was over 140 characters.

What to say when your little sister posts a #TBT of you with braces and acne…

Take that down please. Yesterday, Thailand’s government continued to pressure Facebook to remove a video that appears to show the country’s king walking through a mall in a crop top. Thailand has a law that makes it a crime to insult the royal family, and apparently being caught in a crop top is insulting. Thailand used to be a democracy, but then in 2014 the military took over in a coup. Ever since, the government has clamped down on online speech and social media. The video that allegedly shows the king has apparently been blocked in Thailand, and now the country’s asking for it to be removed from Facebook completely. This comes as Facebook has been having a tough time figuring out how to let people share anything they want while also monitoring things for violence or cultural sensitivity. The king of Thailand hasn’t personally responded - he’s cropping himself out of this controversy for now.

What to say when you still can’t figure out how to pronounce Cannes…

At least Instagram has figured out how to copy Snapchat again.
