The Story

Next week, Bangladesh will start sending more than 650,000 Rohingya refugees back to Myanmar.

Rohingya are a Muslim minority group that have lived in mostly-Buddhist Myanmar for generations. They've long been denied citizenship and access to basic services like health care and education. Last summer, the army cracked down after attacks by a Rohingya militant group. Thousands of Rohingya were raped and killed, and their villages were burned down. The UN called it "ethnic cleansing." Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled to neighboring Bangladesh, where they've been living in temporary camps ever since.

And...?

A few months ago, Bangladesh and Myanmar shook on a deal to send the Rohingya back. Now we have some of the details.

What are they?

The repatriation process is supposed to start next week. Myanmar agreed to take back 300 Rohingya per day and the countries say it'll take two years to complete the process. But it's unclear how the Rohingya will be treated once they're back in Myanmar, or if they even have homes to return to. The UN and others sounded the obvious alarm that Rohingya should not be forced to return to a place that still may not be safe.

USA Gymnastics. Yesterday, survivors of sexual abuse by former team doctor Larry Nassar spoke out at his sentencing hearing. Last year, Nassar pleaded guilty to molesting several young girls. And more than 150 women have accused him of sexual assault. That includes Olympians Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, and McKayla Maroney, who's suing USA Gymnastics for allegedly forcing her into an illegal settlement that keeps her from telling her story. Nearly 100 survivors plan to speak at the hearing this week. Yesterday, Kyle Stephens reminded Nassar that even though she was six when he started abusing her, "little girls don't stay little forever...they grow into strong women that return to destroy your world." Nassar could get at least 40 years in prison. That'd be on top of the 60 years he already got on child porn charges.

What to say when you need a line item approved...

Taking it to the top. Yesterday, the Trump admin said it's taking DACA to the Supreme Court. DACA: the program that protects hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants brought to the US as kids from being deported. Last year, the administration said DACA would be phased out by March unless Congress could come up with a fix. Several states and other groups sued to keep it in place. Last week, a federal judge ruled that DACA can stay until the cases go through court. The Trump admin appealed. Now, it's trying to skip that step and asking the Supremes to weigh in. In other legal moves, more than 20 state attorneys general filed a petition to keep net neutrality in place. Reminder: last year, the FCC voted to get rid of net neutrality aka the idea that all things on the Internet operate at the same speed. Rules for how the Internet will work without net neutrality haven't gone into effect yet. But these states aren't wasting any time saying 'not into it.'

What to say when you hear about the false missile alert in Japan...

In news that is not a drill, Cape Town, South Africa is on track to run out of water by late April. The city's experiencing the worst drought there in a century - and its reservoirs are hurting. It's already been pushing residents to cut back on water use with things like shorter showers and laying off the sprinkler. It isn't enough. If its supply dries up, it could reportedly become the first major city in the world to run out of water. It's working on fixes, like a process that can turn seawater into drinking water. But eventually, residents might have to go to water collection sites to pick up a daily ration of H20.

What people are watching...

This California family. Tomorrow, you'll see those parents in court. The ones with the 13 kids. Earlier this week, authorities discovered the siblings being held captive in their house in Southern CA. One of the daughters had escaped and called 911. When officials showed up, they found some of the kids shackled to their beds. They say the kids looked malnourished and like young children, even though many of them are older than age 18. They're being treated in a hospital. And the parents have been charged with torture and child endangerment.
