Barbara Hoffert photo Dan Brown, Egan, Ide, Maguire, & More | Barbara’s Fiction Picks
Barbara Hoffert, @barbarahoffert

I've already written about Dan Brown's reappearance this fall on the literary scene, and despite a slight pushback in publication date, all systems are go. Thriller readers will also be cheered to learn that Joe Ide is bringing back IQ, eponymous hero of his debut novel, for more West Coast mayhem. Lots of good reading here, but a personal favorite is Bradford Morrow's The Prague Sonata, which intertwines classical music and the 20th-century's dark history with a suspenseful hunt for a musical score that more than one person wants.

October's nonfiction gets serious, with works from Ta-Nehisi Coates, Masha Gessen, and Matt Taibbi addressing core issues of the day. And just slated for September and not yet titled, a new book of essays gives us an upfront and personal view from Hillary Rodham Clinton.

What's fun here: the publication of early works by Man Booker Prize short-listed authors David Szalay (London and the South-East) and Madeleine Thien (Dogs at the Perimeter). Plus, Brazilian songster Chico Buarque and two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks drop in for visits.

Lots of sf/fantasy this time 'round, ranging from Jay Bonansinga bringing back the Walking Dead and Pierce Brown revisiting his big-hit Red Rising world to new stories by Hugh Howey and mystery writer Ausma Zehanat Khan trying on fantasy. Some Christmas treats, too, though not as many as in the past.
