Red-handed: Defendant steals evidence during trial

The term “smoking gun” is often used to refer to a critical piece of evidence in a criminal case. For one woman on trial in Fairbanks, Alaska, the smoking gun is a literal weapon. While on trial for assault and weapons misconduct, the woman took advantage of a jury break to sneak back into the courtroom and steal a piece of the evidence back: her gun. After taking it, she crept outside the courthouse and buried the firearm in the snow. Unfortunately for her, she casually walked back into the courthouse and right into the arms of police — who tacked on a shiny new charge of evidence tampering to her record. I guess you can say they had her “cold.”

As the saying goes: When the cat’s away, the mice will play.
