Praise the Lord, Easter is coming!
But first, as priest and theologian Fleming Rutledge writes in The Undoing of Death, “During this coming week, the church commemorates and dramatizes the victory of the Son of God over the dark Powers. I beg you, do not let any secular or alternative story take priority over this one in your hearts and minds. ‘Lest we forget, lead us to Calvary.’ . . We are summoned to stare evil in the face.”
Rushing toward Sunday sounds so much more pleasant, doesn’t it? And yet, without the sting of death or bitterness of sin, the comfort and sweetness of the resurrection do not hold the power we need them to hold.
Over these next few days, we hope you find words of encouragement in “Suffering and Glory: Meditations on Holy Week and Easter.” This collection of articles features reflections on Holy Week and Easter written over the past 50 years. May you find that, in a world and week so dark, they point you to the coming light of Jesus Christ.
