Happy Monday morning — I hope you had a good weekend!
With Pioneer Day happening this week, expect a lot of great pioneer stories! Here at Deseret.com we’ve already had some great stories over the last couple of weeks like this story showing 25-year-old photos from the sesquicentennial pioneer trek reenactment, this beautiful profile on artist Minerva Teichert and this story of Latter-day Saint pioneers from all over the world.
One of the things I love about this holiday is that it doesn’t just honor the Latter-day Saint pioneers who trekked across the plains to come to Utah in the mid-19th century. Pioneer Day is about all the pioneers in our recent history and those of us alive today who are still pioneers. When I think about pioneers, I often think about my dad who, as a teenager, was the lone member of his family to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, even though it sometimes put him at odds with his family. I also think of this story I read of a boy from Beryl, Utah who couldn’t be stopped from forging forward with new ideas.
I want to hear from you: This week, I’d love to include your pioneer stories. Reply to this email with pioneer stories about your family, ancestors or even yourself. I’ll include a few in the email this week.
Also on our minds today: Recommendations for a Pioneer Day feast, the rise of Christian mortgage companies and a Utahn makes it to the third round of the British Open.
