Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
The Five

Fox News’ late afternoon panel show The Five topped all of MSNBC’s and CNN’s prime time programming in total viewers Tuesday, according to Nielsen data.

With 2.56 million total viewers, The Five had more viewers than each of the competition’s prime time offerings, including each network’s most watched show. MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show averaged 2.27 million total viewers, while CNN’s Cuomo Prime Time had 903k.

The Five also topped nearly all of CNN and MSNBC’s prime time shows in the valuable demo of viewers age 25-54, with 337k, falling just behind Maddow, which had 345k in the demo. (For comparison, the most-watched show in the demo on CNN Tuesday was Anderson Cooper 360, with 234k.)

Tucker Carlson Tonight again was the most-watched in cable news, with 2.87 million total viewers and 478k in demo. The Five was second in total viewers, with 2.56 million (337k in the demo). Hannity was third in total at 2.5 million, and second in demo with 452k. The Rachel Maddow Show was fourth in total at 2.27 million, and fifth in the demo, with 345k. The Ingraham Angle was fifth in total viewers, with 2.04 million, and fourth in the demo, with 335k. Gutfeld! got third in demo at 356k (1.5 million total viewers).

MEDIA LOSER:
OAN

OAN’s Pearson Sharp called for the execution of any “traitor” involved with what he described as a “carrying out a coup against the presidency.”

Sharp opened the essay by claiming “the simple facts point to massive and widespread problems with voting integrity,” suggesting that former President Donald Trump lost the election to President Joe Biden due to widespread voter fraud.

To back up that baseless conspiracy theory, Sharp listed numerous examples of already dismissed allegations of systemic voter fraud, which is bad enough on a service with "news" in its name. But it was his repeated calls for the death penalty of the possible thousands of American citizens he seems to believe were party to a "coup" that took it up a notch.

“What happens to all these people who responsible for overthrowing the election? what are the consequences for traitors? who meddled with our sacred democratic process and try to steal power by taking away the voices of the American people. What happens to them?” he asked.

“In the past, America had a very good solution for dealing with such traitors,” he answered. “Execution.”

The many wild claims made on OAN normally don't make it to our loser column, so disreputable are the outfit's shows and hosts. But this really took it to another level, worth reminding just how disreputable, and offensive, fringe "alternative news" can actually be.

‘Demonstrably False’

Rudy Giuliani’s law license has been suspended.

In a ruling handed down by the New York State Supreme Court Thursday, the state’s Attorney Grievance Committee successfully moved to have the former New York mayor’s license suspended. Specifically, Giuliani’s actions related to his defense of former President Donald Trump were to blame, according to the court.

“We conclude that there is uncontroverted evidence that respondent communicated demonstrably false and misleading statements to courts, lawmakers and the public at large in his capacity as lawyer for former President Donald J. Trump and the Trump campaign in connection with Trump’s failed effort at reelection in 2020,” the court found. “These false statements were made to improperly bolster respondent’s narrative that due to widespread voter fraud, victory in the 2020 United States presidential election was stolen from his client. We conclude that respondent’s conduct immediately threatens the public interest and warrants interim suspension from the practice of law.”

Among the violations the court cited was Giuliani’s repeated false claim of voter fraud in Pennsylvania.

The court noted six instances in which Giuliani repeated this claim, including on his radio show, Steve Bannon’s podcast, and in a meeting before before Michigan’s House Oversight committee.

No, thank you.

Stephen Colbert told his audience that he does not believe “sex parties and orgies” exist — prompting someone to extend an invitation.

On Wednesday’s Late Show, Colbert gave viewers a rundown of NYC Health Authority’s updated guidelines for safer sex amid the pandemic.

“Be creative with sexual positions and physical barriers, like walls, that allow sexual contact while preventing close face-to-face contact,” states one guideline.

“First of all, if you’re able to have sex around a wall, congratulations,” cracked Colbert, adding, “And if you’re using a sex wall, make sure there is a stud every 18 inches.”

Then it got weird... er.
