Gift of Jazz and the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra are thrilled to present a centennial tribute to artist and composer Thad Jones. This program will also feature the East High Jazz Combo, as well as Keith Oxman (director of the East High Jazz Combo). Thad Jones had a stellar career as a trumpeter and composer throughout the 60s and 70s, winning a grammy for his work with Mel Lewis. Thadâs harmonically-rich charts are favorites of the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra (MJO), a top-notch big band here in the Front Range. Boulder-born, Denver-based multi-instrumentalist composer Sonya Walker began her relationship with the piano when she was 5. Originally classically trained, she discovered her love of Black American improvised music by teaching herself trumpet, and eventually transitioned to exploring that tradition on the piano. You can find her all around the Denver area and occasionally beyond, playing both by herself and in various bands; mixed up in an eclectic set of projects

When José James released No Beginning No End 2 (2020), a collaborative effort that paired the forward-looking vocalist with a global all-star cast including Ledisi, Aloe Blacc and Laura Mvula, it was apparent that the genre-defying artist was back to stake his claim as the jazz singer for the hip-hop generation. In that light his new project, On & On: José James Sings Badu finds James throwing down the gauntlet on the past 100 years of jazz singing while charting a path forward for the culture. | | |

| Spencer Zweifel

An accomplished jazz pianist, Zweifel has performed professionally in a wide variety of genres across Colorado as well as in tours around the US. Spencer graduated in 2019 with a degree in jazz studies from the University of Northern Colorado and won âBest pop/rock soloistâ in the 2018 Downbeat Magazine student awards. In 2021, Spencer completed a Masterâs in jazz studies at William Paterson University, where he studied with Bill Charlap, Aaron Diehl, and Geoffrey Keezer.
