A Benefit and Tribute to Al Hood ft. the H2 Jazztet and Friends

Tuesday, Feb. 22 - 6:30pm

Join us for this benefit and tribute concert for Denver jazz staple Alan Hood. On January 27th, Al fell and hit his back and neck. He was instantly paralyzed from the neck down and was taken to the hospital to undergo his first cervical spinal surgery. The future is uncertain at this time, but we do know it will be a long and intensive recovery. Al is a longstanding member of the Denver jazz community, teaching trumpet at DU, co-leading the H2 Big Band and H2 Jazztet with Dave Hanson, and performing in a variety of other groups including the Ken Walker Sextet all over the Front Range. This concert is a celebration of his music featuring the H2 Jazztet and the rest of the H2 Big Band trumpet section. 100% of proceeds will be donated to his Go Fund Me campaign to support medical expenses.

Celebrating Black History Month
Special Guest Artist-Sheryl Renee. Purnell Steen and The Five Points Ambassadors (also known as LeJazz Machine) is a band dedicated to playing and preserving the music of Denver’s legendary Five Points neighborhood. The Blues-oriented Hard Bop music is basically Swing style. And Denver’s own scintillating Myra Warren rounds out the ensemble. For their annual show in Celebration of Black History Month, they will definitely Swing and Sway the Five Points Way, and, ever the storyteller, Purnell will share the histories of Black artists who have worked and played in Five Points.

Legendary saxophonist Charles McPerson and trumpeter Terrell Stafford combine with some of Denver’s best for this special show! Charles has toured the U.S., Europe, Japan, Africa and South America with his own group, as well as with jazz greats Barry Harris, Billy Eckstine, Lionel Hampton, Nat Adderly, Jay McShann, Phil Woods, Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Randy Brecker, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, and others. Terrell Stafford, acclaimed trumpet player based in New York, has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Stafford is recognized as an incredibly gifted and versatile player, he combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism.

Improvisatory music is about shared experience, collective understanding and an inexorable spirit of collaboration. B-RAMP has a plethora of shared experience. The group is based on musical and personal relationships that go back more than four decades. It is that kind of experience that allows musicians to be “in each others heads” as they improvise. Even though they are from different parts of the country (Jeff and Dave are from LA, Paul and Patrick are from Denver, and Ted is from New York), they have a wealth of shared musical experience. They will perform music from their upcoming CD – a mixture of original material and interpretations of jazz standards.
