H2 Big Band: A Message of Healing to Al Hood

Monday, July 11th - 7pm

This is H2 Big Band’s “Call to Health” for Al Hood and the Denver community, and the opening salvo in Dazzle’s Monday night large ensemble series. They will be playing arrangements and compositions of Dave Hanson’s that were written to feature Al, as well as great charts by Wil Swindler and Paul McKee. After Al Hood’s serious spinal injury earlier this year they’ve been going out of their way to keep Al’s situation front and center: his recovery is going to be a long haul, and he will need as much emotional and financial support as our community can make available to him.

Three tenors, not from the operatic tradition, but from Denver’s own rich jazz scene! Master tenor saxophonists Rich Chiaraluce, Pete Lewis, and Eric McGregor each brings a unique “voice” to the improvisations while blending together as one for the melodies. They will perform a variety of standards and originals that will appeal to all jazz fans!

The Delta Sonics

The Delta Sonics music takes a Chicago Blues base and seasons it with Swing, Delta, N’awlins R&B and some early Rock n’ Roll . They were Westword’s best blues band in Denver the last six of eight years. The band made the semi-finals in the Memphis (International Blues Challenge) in 2012. They have been featured at many of the major festivals in Colorado and Wyoming and performed with blues legend John Primer at Dazzle in April!

Mojomama

Mojomama combines Old School Rhythm and Blues and Funk influences from Aretha Franklin to Susan Tedeschi to Steely Dan leaving you with a new yet familiar sound. They were a semi Finalist at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis for 2018 and 2019 representing the Colorado Blues Society, and won Best Band from Colorado Blues Society Members Choice Awards in February 2019. The music is a mix of Funk, Rock ,Blues and Soul.

Bassist Jason Malmberg and guitarist Matt Fuller realized they had both grown up in skate punk culture of the late 80s and early 90s. The two often wondered how they might be able to merge their love of the punk rock they grew up on with their passion for jazz. With the onset of the pandemic, working musicians found themselves with a lot more time on their hands. Jason saw the opportunity and began working on arrangements that would take some of the punk rock music of his childhood and set it in a modern jazz context.

The Quintet is a new project from Guitarist Alex Heffron. The new music fuses elements of Heffron’s past, present and future to create a fresh sonic experience. Alex’s music draws inspiration from all over, Jazz, Rock, Funk, Latin, even a little Metal. The new music has a strong focus on melody, with voices intertwining between the Tenor and Alto saxophone. The blend of these voices mixed with the trio of Guitar, Bass, and Drums, creates a wide open pallet which intrigues the ear. In this world of sonic possibilities, with bright energetic melodies, to solemn ballads, you won’t want to miss this show.

Violinist Monique Brooks Roberts & Cellist Zach Brown come together for one night to play your favorite 90’s R&B tunes reimagined for violin and cello! Monique Brooks Roberts has had a busy and fulfilling career, having performed and recorded for many notable artists including Alicia Keys, Common, Aretha Franklin, and Jill Scott, just to name a few. A self-proclaimed soulful violinist, Monique pushes the envelope in her improvisational style infusing jazz, soul, and any genre of music that speaks to her. Zachary Brown is a NYC based cellist who is both classically and progressive/improvisation trained. Zach focuses on pushing the boundaries of progressive cello playing in his writing and collaborations. Performing at classical venues like Carnegie and Lincoln Center, he has also performed at Nublu 151 with The Turtle Island String Quartet.

A select member of jazz’s piano pantheon, Fred Hersch is a pervasively influential creative force who has shaped the music’s course over more than three decades as an improviser, composer, educator, bandleader, collaborator and recording artist. He has been proclaimed “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade” by Vanity Fair, “an elegant force of musical invention” by The L.A. Times, and “a living legend” byThe New Yorker.

A fifteen-time Grammy nominee, Hersch has regularly garnered jazz’s most prestigious awards, including recent distinctions as a 2016 Doris Duke Artist, 2016 and 2018 Jazz Pianist of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association, and the 2017 Prix Honorem de Jazz from L’Acádemie Charles Cros for the totality of his career.
