CCJA Winter Concert

Over the past twenty years, the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts has attracted incredible young players who have become integral musicians in their respective school groups, members of the Colorado All-State Jazz Band, and recipients of impressive scholarships to major collegiate music programs across the country. Students in CCJA connect with other like-minded players in the area while honing their raft, making music, and having fun. Come support these young musicians in the Winter Concert!

The Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra’s (CJRO) septet is coming to Dazzle in a sultry night of music honoring the legendary Ladies of Jazz and featuring national artist Tatiana Mayfield. “Refreshing and beautiful” are how many have described the voice and persona of Tatiana “LadyMay” Mayfield, a jazz vocalist, musician, composer, and educator from Fort Worth, Texas. Along with the acclaimed CRJO Septet, Love Songs from the Ladies of Jazz promises to be a great night of live music!

Recorded during a global pandemic, Bianchi’s B3 arrangements transcend the anxious hum of today’s headlines and newsfeeds to inspire and revive a weary planet. You won’t want to miss this internationally renowned musician!

Specific Ocean writes and performs original indie music that is reflective of their diverse musical backgrounds. Having met as jazz students at the University of Denver, their desire to pursue other genres led them to form Specific Ocean in late 2014. Jazz, alternative, hip-hop, and funk are all notable components of their sound. Specific Ocean is run by founding members Camilla Vaitaitis and Alec Wenzel and is known for energetic live shows full of improvisation and spontaneity. Stream their newest single, Unity Effect, released on Feb. 20, 2021 anywhere you listen to music!

The King of Beats: J. Dilla Tribute by Manycolors

Although his life and career were short, J Dilla is widely considered to be one of the most influential producers in the hip-hop genre. It was described in The Guardian that “his affinity for crafting lengthy, melodic loops peppered with breakbeats and vocal samples took instrumental hip-hop into new, more musically complex realms.” Come see Manycolors, a Denver based quartet that specializes in hip hop beats played in a jazz context, pay tribute to the “King of Beats” in an intimate setting right in the heart of downtown Denver.

The Denver School of the Arts has a rich 30 year tradition of teaching jazz music to the talented 8th – 12th grade musicians. The school has graduated many of Denver’s premier jazz musicians such as Rico Jones, Colin Stranahan, Alex Heffron, Gabe Rupe, Max Moore, Tony Golden, Rocco Williams and many more. The Jazz Workshop Orchestra has performed many times at the famed Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Festival in New York under the watchful eye of Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Come hear the greats of tomorrow with 4 small groups and the award-winning Jazz Workshop Orchestra led by some of Denver’s best jazz players and instructors.

A modern guitar virtuoso, Fareed Haque, is steeped in classical and jazz traditions. His unique command of the guitar and different musical styles inspire his musical ventures with tradition and fearless innovation. In 2009 Haque was voted ‘Best World Guitarist’ by Guitar Player Magazine’s Readers’ poll. His acclaimed 2009 release, Flat Planet, was twice #1 on the World Jazz Radio charts. New recordings with his own group and with Goran Ivanovic are scheduled to release soon under the legendary Delmark Label.

The sounds and styles of vocalist/composer Jocelyn Medina cross cultures, creeds and continents. A veteran of the New York jazz scene and producer of the weekly “Sunday Vocal Jazz Jam” series, now in its 7th year, she is fast becoming a strong, new element of the Denver/Boulder music community. Jocelyn developed her unique blend of jazz, neo-soul and world music over the course of two decades of studying, performing, recording and touring in and around the NYC area as well as abroad in Ghana, India, Spain and Brazil. Since moving to Colorado in 2021, she has been collaborating with great local musicians who will join her in a very special Valentine’s Day weekend performance at Dazzle. Listeners can anticipate an eclectic mix of jazz, Brazilian and original music that celebrates love and the human condition.

Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini

Possessing a voice as cool and crystalline as an Alpine stream, Natalie Cressman is a rising singer/songwriter and trombonist who draws inspiration from a vast array of deep and powerful musical currents. She released her 5th album in April 2019, this time in collaboration with Brazilian composer, guitarist, and vocalist Ian Faquini. Drawing from impressionism, jazz, and the great Brazilian songwriting tradition, Setting Rays of Summer is a ten-track collection of original material featuring compositions in Portuguese, English, and French. With the warm instrumentation of acoustic guitar and trombone alongside two-part vocal harmonies hugging the Brazilian-accented Portuguese, Cressman & Faquini weave their musical voices together to create a fully orchestrated sound befitting a much larger ensemble.
