Arturo Gómez, Denver’s KUVO Music Director, interviews Greg Gisbert to discuss the Dizzy Gillespie’s 104th Birthday celebration that kicks off Dazzle Denver’s 25 Year Anniversary.
The five shows over three days, October 20-22, 2021, feature John Lee on bass, Tommy Campbell on drums, and Greg Gisbert on trumpet.
Each night features a different theme.
October 20th starts with ‘The Brilliant Compositions of Dizzy Gillespie Through the Decades’ with Dizzy’s most popular hits as a composer and an arranger.
October 21st features two shows exploring the many decades of ‘Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Latin Experience.’ Dizzy Gillespie is considered by many to be the creator of World Music because wherever Dizzy went, he would incorporate some oft he rhythm or harmony from the region. Even though he had never heard the music before, he was such a great life-long learner of music that he was also able to teach it to his band members.
October 22nd displays the original music from Dizzy’s big band library through ‘Big Band Artistry of Dizzy Gillespie’ with six people who either played with Dizzy himself or in the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars. The night ends with a wild ‘Dizzy’s 104th Birthday Bash JAM.’
In addition to John Lee, Tommy Campbell, and Greg Gisbert, the October 22nd shows feature a wide range of talented musicians from Denver’s music community including faculty, students, and alumni of the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts.
Tickets can be purchased to each of the five shows at www.DazzleDenver.com with an optional ‘Dizzy Birthday 3-Day Pass’ that gets you into all five shows and an invitation to join the band for dinner after the first show on Oct. 20th.
