The Roaring 21’s

Dear ,

In the last month, since our first edition of ‘The Roaring 21’s,’ Dazzle’s new monthly newsletter, we have been busy. 37 live on-stage shows, 5 simultaneous Live Streams, 1 private event, and 1 big Thank You Party.

It has been great seeing all of you and we look forward to seeing more of you throughout the rest of the year. Take a look at our full calendar to plan a great night out.

We are in the midst of an artistic revolution and Dazzle can’t wait to bring you the best of it!

Part of what happened during the pandemic is that many bands cultivated their creativity and come out with new funk sounds that have strong jazz influences. Dazzle @ Baur’s is thrilled to bring this funk infusion to our stage. We hope you enjoy it too.

Featured Musician: Joe Anderies

Arturo Gómez from Denver’s KUVO Music Director interviews influential flute and saxophonist Joe Anderies.

You know how teachers plant seeds that grown into a person’s life passions? Joe is responsible for over 25 years of planting musical seeds in students from elementary school through to university.

Joe graduated from Metropolitan State University of Denver with degrees in Flute Performance and Music Education. Subsequently, he obtained his masters degree at the University of Colorado in Music Education and Saxophone. Concluding over 25 years of teaching in Douglas County and Denver Public Schools, Joe recently retired in order to concentrate on his performing, music publishing, and clinician initiatives.

Jos has served as Colorado president of several jazz education organizations, including as CCJA’s (Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts) current President, and is also working on publishing much of his band and orchestra music written for student groups over the years.

In this interview, Joe and Arturo discuss:

  • What is planned for Joe’s upcoming shows at Dazzle @ Baur’s.

  • How Joe’s music shifted during the pandemic.

  • How often he uses his classical flute training.

You can catch Joe live, on stage at Dazzle at Baur’s for three shows in July.

You can listen to Arturo’s show on KUVO, ‘Jazz with Arturo Gómez’ every weekday at Noon on 89.3 FM Denver, 89.7 FM Breckenridge, 88.5 FM Vail or online at KUVO.org.

The Roots Groove & BBQ Featuring Joe Smith & The Spicy Pickles

If you read our last monthly newsletter, you know that we at Dazzle are exploring this idea of how musicians spent a lot of the pandemic cultivating their creativity. Now that we are in the midst of the new Roaring 21’s, we often look for ways to promote these inventive experiences. ‘The Roots Groove & BBQ’ is an innovative way to enjoy a night out.

Joe Smith’s Grandma taught him to cook. For him, cooking brings feelings of community, love, and positive relationships. There is something special about feeding someone’s soul through their stomach.

When Joe began working, he made his way through restaurants with both front and back of house experience. This means he fully understands what all goes into creating a truly memorable dining experience.

Additionally, Joe’s Grandma also requested that he try the trumpet at the age of 10, which became another lifelong passion. Now, he leads his own band, ‘Joe Smith & The Spicy Pickles.’

Pulling inspiration from bands of the 1920’s – 1960’s the Pickles create an authentic and original sound that is known for its infectious groove.

Joe wears two hats for this event: Bandleader and Chef. That’s right. Joe will be providing one of his own original BBQ dishes to make this an all-encompassing dinner & a show. Did we mention that the dance floor will be open?

Joe will be cooking:

  • Starter - Deviled Egg

  • Main - 14-hour Smoked Pulled Pork, tossed with J.L. Schmittys’ Sauce #1, a mustard vinegar based sauce, topped with apple slaw and served on a drop buttermilk biscuit.

  • Side - Creamless Corn Mash, take some corn and mash it through a sieve, which works as the cream.

  • Dessert - Philadelphia Style Ice Cream (which means an eggless base), with two cereal based flavors to choose from.

    • Lucky Charms with sugar cookies on the side.

    • Reeces Puffs ice cream served with snickerdoodle on the side.

  • Drink - St. Germaine gin and tonic, courtesy of the event’s sponsor Spring 44 Distilling.

Come join us at Dazzle @ Baur’s for this unique experience. Socialize, dance, and eat great food from the band leader.

On Thursday, July 15th there are two seatings at 6pm and 9pm.

Tickets for the 6pm show can be purchased here.

Tickets for the 9pm show can be purchased here.

Decker Babcock, also a member of Joe Smith & The Spicy Pickles, interviews Joe Smith about The Roots Groove & BBQ. Be sure to watch the end to learn what the wild call of the pickle sounds like.
