Sir Patchalot and Margaret Patcher are the names for our new patch robots

Out of the many name suggestions we have received for our two new patch robots, Sir Patchalot and Margaret Patcher were the names an overwhelming majority chose at the DE-CIX TechMeeting in Frankfurt. The TechMeeting was a blast: we discussed 5G, peering, the future of interconnection, and many more topics. Read more about it below. In addition, we'll report on the DE-CIX annual report 2018, our VirtualPNI service, and many more topics. Enjoy the newsletter!

DE-CIX Annual Report 2018: Strong global turnover and customer growth characterize internationalization

At the end of 2018, the DE-CIX Internet Exchanges connected almost 1,600 customers worldwide, a growth of close to 30 percent in comparison with 2017. The connected customer capacity grew by over 35 percent to more than 45 Terabits, and the total number of 100 GE ports across all DE-CIX locations now stands at more than 300, a rise of 45 percent.

Now live: Location-based redistribution control via the route servers

We’re happy to announce that location-based redistribution control via our route servers is now possible at the DE-CIX locations where we offer the GlobePEER Remote service (except Berlin and Moscow). With this new feature, we’ve added the possibility to control the redistribution of advertised prefixes not only on an ASN basis but also on geolocation basis.

Available IPv4 routes shown on connected customer lists

In addition to the overall network count, we now also display the number of available IPv4 routes at the route servers above the connected networks list of every exchange. The information is extracted out of the DE-CIX Looking Glass, and you can jump from the connected networks lists directly to the respective route server information with the Looking Glass button.

Introducing: DE-CIX VirtualPNI

With the VirtualPNI service, not only can you establish virtual private connections within a metro region but also between metro regions. It can be used for MPLS connections, enterprise network traffic, or the selling of transit or paid peering. You can save on Capex and Opex as no additional equipment is needed, and you can easily extend the reach of your own network by using the DE-CIX infrastructure.

From cool stuff that works to Sir Patchalot and Margaret Patcher – DE-CIX TechMeeting 2019

We are sure everyone who was there agrees: This year’s DE-CIX TechMeeting was a blast. More than 100 network engineers, network architects, peering managers and the like joined us. One thing we've found out: All you need to show the effect of latency is a small ball on a cord, a test person with virtual reality glasses, and someone who throws the ball.

DE-CIX behind the scenes:
Meet Wolfgang Tremmel

The peering community meets at several events throughout the year, but very often, people don’t know more than the job title and perhaps a little bit about what people do at DE-CIX. With this DE-CIX behind the scenes series, we will give you a little bit more information about the DE-CIX team, their everyday work, and what drives them – at work, but also personally.

We've photoshopped a little in order to integrate our robots, but don't they look nice in the middle of the people who decided on their names? Have a look at the pictures of this year's DE-CIX TechMeeting here.
