Celebrating five years of DE-CIX Madrid

DE-CIX first expanded to Southern Europe in 2016 by opening an Internet Exchange in Madrid. The exchange in Madrid has experienced continued growth in terms of connected networks and traffic, while the ecosystem around it has also expanded with further locations. We now operate five exchanges in Southern Europe, which together constitute the largest neutral interconnection ecosystem in the region.

Our June newsletter celebrates the Madrid exchange’s birthday and brings you the latest DE-CIX news from Southern Europe and beyond.

The Southern European interconnection landscape

Madrid is at the heart of the largest neutral interconnection ecosystem in Southern Europe, consisting of over 400 networks, five digital hubs, and multiple data centers. Theresa Bobis, Regional Director Southern Europe at DE-CIX, shares her thoughts about how the regional interconnection landscape has developed and what the future might bring. Read the interview.

Theresa also talks about how we collaborate closely with partners in the region; the latest being Adam, the first partner to offer the DirectCLOUD service in Spain, and with EllaLink to optimize the submarine Internet route between Europe and the Americas, creating a new low-latency pathway for transatlantic data traffic.

With the two partners, we also commissioned TeleGeography to develop a study which analyzes how the expansion of data centers, the growing presence of cloud operators, new submarine cables, and Internet Exchanges are turning the Iberian Peninsula into a strategic interconnection region.

DE-CIX Annual Report 2020

Last year was exceptional in many ways and, at DE-CIX, we experienced one milestone after the other. Within just a few days in March 2020, average global data traffic rose between 15% and 30%, and Frankfurt had the largest annual increase in peak traffic in its entire history.
