Today is Monday. Temperatures will be in the low 80s to mid-70s from north to south with cloudy skies and scattered showers. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Nearly a year ago, a long-awaited trip to Acadia became park’s deadliest incident ever

  • Lenny Fuchs moved to the U.S. from Ukraine as a child, and he later became a lawyer in New York City’s legal department. Laura Leong grew up in California and moved to New York to study fashion design and advocate for fair trade. Mohammad Zeeshan, a native of Pakistan, worked as an emergency medical technician in and around the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. All three shared a love of the outdoors, which is what brought them together to Mount Desert Island last summer to spend a weekend hiking in Acadia National Park.
  • As teachers and administrators across Maine move closer to handling the logistical challenges of teaching during a pandemic, they are looking north. Easton and Mars Hill were the first public schools in Maine to go back to school after the pandemic sent students home in the spring to finish the year using remote learning.
  • Congress Street, the retail and commercial thoroughfare running through the heart of Maine’s largest city, has seen a score of vacant storefronts during a coronavirus pandemic that has hammered food and shopping. While experts say it will recover as the economy increasingly reopens and rents drop, many of those businesses will never return.
Opponents keeping up the fight against CMP corridor after court nixes referendum

  • After the state's high court removed a referendum aiming to kill the $1 billion project, the path for opponents narrowed. But there are still two lawsuits and the possibility of legislative action on the issue, though all could face high hurdles and the utility and its partners are buoyed by recent events.

Before she became a champion runner, this Mainer was carried from the finish line to an ambulance
  • Gladys Ganiel O’Neill’s enthusiasm for running wasn’t dampened even after she collapsed 400 meters from the finish at the cross country state championships her freshman year — and was carried to an ambulance. She went on to win state titles and compete nationally. O'Neill will be inducted into the Maine Running Hall of Fame sometime next year.
Mainers see medication, bills and checks delayed amid Postal Service woes

  • The scope of mail delays is unclear in Maine as problems with the Postal Service become perhaps the hottest issue in U.S. politics ahead of a fraught November election. But many are reporting new issues with their mail, including a Somerville man who needs refrigerated medication to fight off a knee infection.

Ballot question opposing CMP corridor project formally dead as officials decline to place it on the ballot
  • The Maine secretary of state’s office announced Friday that a question that would have killed Central Maine Power’s proposed powerline project won’t appear on the November ballot, ending one the most high-profile local campaigns this year. The courts’ actions end perhaps the most expensive referendum campaign in Maine history.

Orrington hires new town manager a year after town controversy and ‘rough patch’

  • The new Orrington town manager has his marching orders from selectmen: “Keep us out of the media spotlight.”
