Debussy: La Mer – Facsimile

More Information

A selection of further facsimiles

Dear musicians

Sensual instrumentation, subtle rhythms, flowing moods – with “La Mer”, his “three symphonic sketches”, Claude Debussy created a key work of musical impressionism.#

Debussy, an admirer of Japanese prints, wrote the autograph score with almost calligraphic clarity and elegance. This new facsimile is another masterpiece from Bärenreiter that has been published as part of the Documenta musicologica II series.

A wonderful edition to marvel at, study or give as a gift.

Sensual instrumentation, subtle rhythms, flowing moods – with "La Mer", his "three symphonic sketches", Claude Debussy created a key work of musical impressionism.

Debussy's autograph score served for the engraving of the first edition. Additional entries in a different hand (accidentals, performance instructions, notes for the layout) reflect this work step. At the same time, Debussy himself made corrections, once by pasting in a piece of paper, which is reproduced in the facsimile according to the original.

Renowned Debussy scholar Denis Herlin explains the history of the work's genesis and the special features of the autograph. Mathias Auclair, head of the music department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, presents the manuscript as part of the BnF collection.

Enigmatic and yet simply explained

Originally, Debussy gave the first movement of “La Mer” the somewhat enigmatic title “Fair seas in the Sanguinaires Islands”, also known as the “Blood Islands”, four dark red porphyry islets just off Corsica. After various literary explanatory attempts, researchers found the simple answer: Debussy was quoting – as a close friend of his had done in correspondence – from a marine weather report!

The page with the original heading can be seen in the appendix of the facsimile, and Denis Herlin explains the whole story in the Commentary.
