Good afternoon! It's Friday, June 9, and today's headlines include research on the decline of Christianity in the U.S., the Girl Scouts offering an LGBT patch, and details on the newly released "Flamin' Hot" film.
Research from Communio suggests that absent fathers and collapsed marriages are two key reasons for the decline of Christianity in the United States. The Nationwide Study on Faith and Relationships drew on data from a national survey of 19,000 Sunday church attendees from 112 congregations in 13 states. Findings showed approximately 80% of Sunday churchgoers were raised in homes where their biological parents were married to each other throughout their upbringing. The study also confirms that "boys who grew up in homes with married parents are considerably more likely to attend church regularly as adults." Full Story.

A document directed to troop leaders and guardians shows that Girls Scouts of the USA offers an LGBT-themed patch that scouts can earn through activities such as attending a pride parade or creating a rainbow-themed flag. The organization is encouraging all levels to celebrate the LGBT movement this month, including younger children in the Daisy, Brownie and Junior Girl Scout levels. Read more.
Prosecutors have dropped charges against Pennsylvania street preacher Damon Atkins, who was arrested while reading from the Bible across the street from an LGBT pride event in Reading. The Berks County District Attorney's Office stated that the charges were withdrawn after reviewing videos of the incident "along with applicable case law." A now-viral video shows Atkins telling an officer he is on public property to which the officer acknowledges it is public property but says to "let them have their day." Read more.
Chosen Books co-founder Elizabeth Sherrill has died at the age of 95. An accomplished Christian author and editor, Sherrill is credited with helping to "elevate the impact" of Christian publishing, said Evangelical Christian Publishers Association President and CEO Jeff Crosby. Read more.
