From faster data speeds than ever before to the prospect of autonomous vehicles, this coming new generation of mobile internet promises to turn several science-fiction dreams into reality. But 5G is also quietly emerging as a catalyst that could revolutionize the most basic of human needs: life-saving emergency medical care. A growing number of pilot projects are now testing the potential of 5G to help drones drop off insulin or defibrillators, connect emergency responders with faraway medical experts and help ambulances beam up complex medical data to doctors in real time.

Barefoot and shivering, I watched from the sidewalk as flames pushed out the basement windows of the three-story wooden tenement, then up along the siding and toward the roof with speed.

It was the middle of the night. There were neighbors out watching the fire. A frat boy who lived next door saw my bare feet and brought out a pair of boat shoes. I thanked him and put them on my feet. Fire trucks arrived and doused the flames, by then consuming the whole building. The firefighters put up ladders, climbed to the roof and ripped open a hole with pickaxes.

At the Los Angeles Lakers’ media day in September, LeBron James showed up to his first press conference with his new team wearing a gold jersey and a white armband. With all due respect to King James, he’s wrong. The Lakers hang only their 16 championship banners from the Staples Center rafters — not those reflecting their 23 division titles and 31 Western Conference championships. In Lakerland, it’s championship or bust.
