Saints to hire Allen as head coach; carjacker now accused of murder

By Chad Calder | Staff writer

COACH ALLEN: The Saints are expected to pick defensive coordinator Dennis Allen to succeed Sean Payton as head coach. Players have great things to say about Allen, who is responsible for turning the Saints defense around since those dreaded 7-9 seasons several years back (you may recall the Saints losing games despite racking up more than 40 points). You'll find all our coverage here.

CHARGES MOUNT: A day after the arrest of the 18-year-old accused of carjacking a woman at Costco and dragging her at the gas pumps, police have booked Tyrese Harris on a charge of second-degree murder. Ramon Antonio Vargas and Gabriella Killet have the latest on how a cellphone Harris dropped just days before the carjacking connects him to the killing of a 12-year-old boy.

Meanwhile, hundreds gathered outside City Hall to protest the rise in crime in a rally organized by colleagues of the carjacking victim. Reporter Matt Sledge was there, and has more on the the accused teen and past efforts to keep him out of a life of crime.

RAT RODEO: The annual nutria rodeo was held in Grand Isle over the weekend, and participants managed to top last year's 10-ton haul.

Thanks for starting your day with us.
