Two deputies arrested in fatal shooting. And a former sheriff becomes a lifer

By Bob Warren

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said it had arrested two of its own deputies following the fatal shooting last week of a man inside an SUV on a Marrero street. That fatal shooting was the first since JPSO outfitted deputies with body-worn cameras. The deputies have been booked with manslaughter, Sheriff Joe Lopinto said during a late-night news conference Monday.

Becoming a lifer: In St. Tammany Parish, a powerful former sheriff has been formally sentenced to life behind bars. Jack Strain, the longtime top lawman who was convicted last November of sex crimes against juveniles, received four life sentences and 30 additional years on top of that during his formal sentencing in Covington this morning.

Another family grieves: A John Ehret High School student was shot to death at a bus stop Monday morning. His friends and family now find themselves asking themselves why he was targeted. Ahmad Howard's murder comes at a time when a wave of high-profile crimes involving young victims has shaken the region.

Parade tracker: Slidell parade-goers might sometimes wonder about those busy railroad tracks that run alongside a big stretch of the city’s parade route. Yes, trains apparently do pass during parades. In fact, Saturday night some kids playing on the tracks forced a train to make an emergency stop. It's a cautionary tale, city officials say.

Speaking of parades, a new krewe makes its debut tonight in Marrero. The Culinary Queens of New Orleans includes women in the food, drink and hospitality businesses. The theme? "Eat, Drink and Be Merry" of course.

No job, but an attagirl (and a signed football): Finally, a young girl named Izzy applied for the most-high-profile job opening in New Orleans recently. But, alas, the Saints went with Dennis Allen as their new head coach instead. Izzy did get a nice letter from Saints owner Gayle Benson -- the Saints will let her know if a job opens -- and an autographed football.
