dear designboom reader,
algae have long evolved from just being photosynthetic organisms. their potential is often explored in the field of design, and some have already employed algae in their works such as paradoxal surfboards, which upcycle them to create 3D-printed surfboards. algae also emerge in fashion as streetwear made from preserved seaweed, further highlighting their versatile uses.
algae as wrappers can also be eaten, as evidenced by the edible 'nakedpak' food wrap which introduces a series of dissolvable food packaging. if their supply becomes short amid their incorporation in design and exploration of many of their capabilities, a vertical-farming technology in iceland can convert clean energy and enable microalgae to grow indoors.
thanks for reading!
