architecture during this year’s venice architecture biennale, designboom met up with MVRDV co-founder winy maas to discuss the firm’s participation at the time – space – existence exhibition, organized by the european cultural centre and the GAA foundation, its presence at the hong kong pavilion, as well as maas’ fascination with albania and film. 'here is another kind of emphasis this year, which is respectable because every biennale should be different and very personal — that’s what makes it interesting.' read the interview in full, here. meanwhile, when camarim arquitectos was commissioned to renovate a house in delgada, portugal, the clients placed great importance on the garden. they intended to spend a lot of time outside in the picturesque nature of the region, 75 kilometers from lisbon. camarim devised a pergola and pool structure called ‘delgada 1,’ to help the users fully enjoy the outdoors. it was clear from the start that this structure wouldn’t end up as just an extension to the house. instead, it was devised as a distinct pavilion. soon it would tell its own story with a unique architecture vernacular and stand out from the landscape almost as a monument. |

design with just 15 models manufactured each year, the pagani zonda R is one of the rarest cars in the world. however, inside an $8 million luxury condominium on the oceanfront of miami, one of the very few privately owned zondas has been installed to function as both as a high-impact partition between the living room and master suite, and an artistic centerpiece for the residence. also this week, designboom took a look inside the studio of snarkitecture. the new york-based collaborative design practice — led by alex mustonen, daniel arsham and ben porto — considers the breakdown of boundaries between disciplines, and seeks to create unexpected and memorable moments from the everyday. from a billowing cloud-like canopy devised for a pop-up shop’s interior, to an immersive 10,000 square foot ball pool at one of the U.S.’ most prestigious museums, snarkitecture’s conceptual approach is centered on the importance of experience. |

art following the release of the model Y, tesla CEO elon musk teases information regarding the company’s upcoming all-electric pickup truck. musk took to twitter on tuesday to ask followers what they would like to see in tesla’s upcoming truck, revealing some interesting details in the process. according to musk’s tweets the pickup would be a smaller version of tesla’s semi. musk said the truck will come standard with dual motor all-wheel drive, ‘crazy torque,’ and a suspension that dynamically adjusts for the load. MIT engineers have created 3D-printed structures whose movements can be controlled with a wave of a magnet. the menagerie of soft structures that can be magnetically manipulated includes a smooth ring that wrinkles up, a long tube that squeezes shut, a sheet that folds itself, and a spider-like ‘grabber’ that can crawl, roll, jump, and snap together fast enough to catch a passing ball. |

readers ‘big space, little space’ is an adaptive re-use of a clay tile garage built in the 1920s into a dwelling and workshop, tucked away in the middle of a residential block in buffalo, new york. the work is the latest project by design duo davidson rafailidis, comprising a flexible workshop which transforms depending on the season. over time buildings stray from their original programs and develop lives of their own. even in the timespan of a single year, spaces can offer to change qualities that require users to engage with them in different ways. big space, little space takes this transformative nature of space as its premise. in other news, london-based engineer james roberts unveils 'helyx', a bike that aims to give the user more control. the piece features an option to unlock your rear wheel and seat so that the long wave-like frame is not synchronized with them. while unlocked, helyx allows steering the rear wheel as well as the front one, which opens new possibilities of biking — much more tricks are available with this feature. meanwhile, just by locking one handle, helyx becomes a normal bike. |
