architecture korean architect yong ju lee installed a giant, circle-shaped piece of furniture within seoul’s hangang park.measuring 30 meters in diameter (almost 100 feet), ‘root bench’ appears to organically spread across the terrain like the roots of an enormous tree. the object allows visitors to the park to lean, sit, or lie on its sprawling ‘branches’, which are elevated above the ground at different heights. meanwhile, in the mexican jungle, a new arts complex has opened as part of an eco-friendly luxury resort. inspired by the abundant natural environment and the rich heritage of the local mayan culture, AZULIK uh may has been conceived as a multi-faceted and flexible venue that comprises art space, a fashion and design lab, an arts and crafts school, a recording studio, and residencies for creative talents. the project joins the adjacent IK LAB, an arts space previously featured on designboom here. |

art earlier this week, artist cai guo qiang ignited a daytime explosion event dubbed city of flowers in the sky on piazzale michelangelo, overlooking the city of florence. inspired by botticelli’s renaissance masterpiece ‘primavera’, the event — that lasted about ten minutes — used the sunlit sky as a canvas. during the spectacle, 50,000 customized fabricated fireworks shot out smokes resembling thousands of flowers to celebrate the opening of the artist’s solo exhibition flora commedia: cai guo qiang at the uffizi. in other news, in celebration both of the achievements of the soviet space program, photographer docubyte presents the photo series ‘cosmic pop’ as a vivid memorial to the conquerors of space. in their pursuit of technological achievement, it is unlikely that soviet designers and engineers were considerate of the beauty of what they were creating, though in retrospect these objects have acquired an alluringly brutal aesthetic. |

technology raw, expansive and beautiful: just a few ways to describe the state of texas. its also a few ways to describe the all-new mercedes-benz GLE. with an additional wheelbase length of 80mm, passengers in the rear are treated to 69mm more legroom and 825 liters of luggage space. as well as this, the result delivers what gordon wagener, chief design officer at daimler AG, calls the perfect SUV proportions, and he is certainly not wrong. at the wheel, designboom drove the SUV through the state – specifically from the big bend national park by the rio grande to the contemporary desert town of marfa and then further west to el paso – to test whether everything is truly bigger and better in texas. |
