architecture this week, the national museum of qatar, designed by french architect jean nouvel, opened to the public. the winding gallery offers a journey through a series of encompassing environments including architectural space, music, poetry, archaeological objects, commissioned artworks, monumentally-scaled art films, and more. together, the 11 galleries take visitors from the formation of the qatar peninsula millions of years ago to the nation’s present. in other big news, the city of chicago announced the winning entry for the international competition to design the new global terminal and concourse for o’hare international airport. studio ORD, a collaborative effort led by jeanne gang, presents a design that celebrates the american city’s continued legacy as a city shaped by lines of movement. like the confluence of the chicago river, the design’s converging three branches generate a centralized hub that establishes a vibrant new neighborhood in the heart of o’hare’s campus. curving to increase efficiency, wayfinding, and connectivity, the three-part form merges terminal and concourse into a single building. the design held off competition from other big names, including santiago calatrava, SOM, and foster + partners. |

art in art news, it was announced that a giant version of american artist KAWS’ signature character, companion, will end its near one-week long swim in hong kong’s victoria harbor due to bad weather. the 121-foot-long inflatable was launched off the central harbourfront last friday as part of hong kong arts month, concurrently with art basel in hong kong. elsewhere, italian-canadian artist cosimo cavallaro began construction on his six-feet-high (1.8 meter) wall at the US-mexico border, which is being built with large blocks of expired cotija cheese. developed in response to the political environment we are living in today, the installation seeks to make people look at the wall in a different way, and make us realize that no matter which side of it we are standing, we are all the same. |

technology from athens to porto heli, designboom drove the new 2020 range rover evoque across greece. from climbing treacherous mountain tracks down to cruising along seaside roads, we drove past – and across in the case of the corinth canal – many engineering triumphs whilst in a marvel of our own. the 2020 range rover evoque is larger, has more advanced driver assistance technologies and off-road capabilities than previously, yet its design, especially the exterior, epitomizes the minimal mantra -- less is more. an angular greenhouse, high waistline and smooth surfaces distinguish a vision of modernity that extends into the interior and the experience overall. |

readers new york-based artists and designers, nikolas bentel and lukas bentel, shared their latest project, a ‘geodesic igloo’ made from slabs of ice. the concept has been developed as an architectural exploration that combines igloo construction and the modernist tradition of geodesic domes. the project employs a very simple construction method that allows triangular sheets of ice to be easily cast and then formed together into a habitable ice structure. meanwhile, lacime architects shared its design of vanke emerald park, a project located close to chongqing central park in china. the concept behind the scheme creates a large public building, while the architectural design looks to reinterpret the essence of a traditional chinese space using a contemporary architectural language. |
