this week, the 2019 serpentine pavilion, the temporary structure erected each year in london’s hyde park, has been unveiled. the pavilion has been designed by junya ishigami — known for his experimental structures that interpret traditional architectural conventions and reflect natural phenomena. ‘my design for the pavilion plays with our perspectives of the built environment against the backdrop of a natural landscape, emphasizing a natural and organic feel as though it had grown out of the lawn, resembling a hill made out of rocks,’ explains the japanese architect. the design is made by arranging slates to create a single canopy roof that appears to emerge from the ground of the surrounding park.

in other news, bjarke ingels group/ BIG unveiled plans for a new 18-story hotel named after danish fairy tale writer hans christian andersen, situated inside the tivoli gardens amusement park in copenhagen. the whimsical structure resembles a pagoda, while it will be covered in lush gardens and greenery and generate as small an environmental footprint as possible.

latvian artist germans ermičs created a technicolor pavilion for instagram that brings the social network’s rainbow gradient to life. following the theme of 'where the rainbow ends' – also the title of the work – ermičs has replicated this faded effect with a 360-degree perspective, allowing passers-by to reach the end of the ‘rainbow’. inside, light effects by london based urban electric project rainbows around the room.

meanwhile, tesler + mendelovitch – known for their delicate and intricate work with timber – has created a 3D wooden textile that can be used across a wide range of applications. taking inspiration from natural fibers and geometric structures, the tel-aviv based studio has embarked on a research project to create an innovative and sustainable design solution for interiors. beginning with typically rigid planks of timber, the duo has transformed the medium into a bendable and sculptural material.

situated on the very top of le corbusier’s cité radieuse in marseille — built between 1945 and 1952 — ora ito’s MAMO (marseille modulor) is a place among the clouds devoted to art and design. inaugurated in 2013, the project sees a different artist take over the rooftop every summer, focusing on the confrontation between the artwork and a space charged with le corbusier’s avant garde spirit. for the opening of the alex israel show at MAMO, designboom visited marseille to discover the art space and get an insider’s view into ora ito’s ventures — including that time he slept in front of an artist’s door for days to get him to accept a show...

sadly the era of sculptured coachwork cars is long gone and, sometimes, the only spots to see them are at vintage shows such as lake como’s concorso d’eleganza and pebble beach’s concours d’elegance. at design miami basel 2019, though, stuart parr collection brings a wave of nostalgia and joy in its continued study of la dolce vita. titled ‘riviera rendezvous’, the assembly unites custom-built fiats – including the famed jolly beach car – that were specifically designed for leisure and enjoyment. here, we highlight these one-off specials.

when you get lemons, make lemonade but when designboom readers arquitectura al descubierto got oranges, they made them float in the interiors of their own project. in the center of madrid, the spanish firm renovated an apartment originally built in 1910 and redistributed the original residence’s layout. in the new distribution, the architects mimicked the structure of a tree by creating a central area that contains the service areas of the house and all the other rooms branch out of this central body. they then created organic scenarios in the project’s photographs.

in other news from our readers, x+living completed a whimsical swimming and recreational club for children and parents, the loong swim club in suzhou, china. the colorful accents and geometries create dream-like environments in each room, while polka-dotted and striped furniture and lighting pieces add pops of patten in pastel spaces.
