WEEK IN REVIEW this week, we shared more creative emergency responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. the team at multiply studio, who uploaded their work via designboom's reader submissions, introduced the 'petticoat dress' to maintain safe social interaction with fun, style and comfort; foreward studio noticed the number of people using their feet to press the button at pedestrian crossings, and decided to develop a handsfree solution they've called 'dropkick'; in new york city, painted white circles appeared on the grass of brooklyn’s domino park, giving visitors visual guides to safe socializing areas. meanwhile, it was announced this week that the venice architecture biennale, originally scheduled for 2020, has now been postponed until 2021 — opening on may 22 and closing on november 21. the decision was made after the event’s organizers said it was impossible to successfully present such a complex exhibition in the wake of COVID-19. as part of designboom’s coverage of the biennale, we had prepared a series of preview videos – the first of which can be seen here will now be updated with more information to follow soon. in the meantime, look ahead at what to expect from the UAE pavilion in our video here. in other news, if your thinking of how to spend a socially-distant summer holiday, consider the 'z-triton' by latvian studio zeltini – a tiny electric camper that incorporates the functions of a home, a boat and a trike to allow users to travel over land and water. the amphibious mobile unit can sleep up to two people, and is designed for weekend getaways deep into nature, or ‘expeditions around the world,’ according to the studio. finally, designboom has been reaching out to artists to share messages of hope with our readers worldwide. since beginning the initiative, dedications have been kindly contributed to us by olafur eliasson, david shrigley, julian charrière, doug aitken, monica bonvicini, tomás saraceno, tony oursler, and ryan gander. italian artist paola pivi now dedicates a message, and images of her signature bears in black – ‘keep your eyes and ears open, keep them open always in the future too.’ |
