ORA ÏTO ON REDESIGNING THE ICONIC RENAULT 17 SPORTS COUPÉ OF THE 70s
designboom speaks to ora ïto on the occasion of the R17 electric restomod's debut in paris earlier this month. based on the iconic renault 17 sports coupé, the french designer unveils a sculptural, retro-futuristic retake on the 1971 model. 'there’s this idea of taking a normal model, making it new, and incorporating my design language—what I use in architecture, product design, and furniture—into a car,' ïto tells us. 'this gives the car a distinct look compared to others today, which often resemble transformers with too much information, losing elegance and purity. I wanted to implement simplicity, clarity, and geometric harmony.' read our conversation in full here, and discover more recent interviews here.
