CHRISTO AND JEANNE-CLAUDE'S 'MASTABA' IN ABU DHABI

christo and jeanne-claude's only permanent, large-scale public artwork will be built in abu dhabi. conceived in 1977, 'the mastaba' will be the largest contemporary sculpture (in volume) in the world, made from 410,000 multi-colored barrels to form 'a colorful mosaic, echoing islamic architecture.' the planned public artwork recalls the london mastaba, which was recreated in augmented reality (see designboom’s coverage here) just before christo’s passing in may 2020.

TOYO ITO'S CONTEMPORARY RUIN IN SPAIN

in the early 2000s, the seaside city of torrevieja in spain commissioned japanese architect toyo ito to design a relaxation park named 'la caracola'. the building was never completed due to various reasons, and has since been appropriated by locals in various ways. in his latest project, architectural photographer kyrre sundal captures the project's current state, highlighting both its relationship with the natural surroundings and with the humans who use it as a hangout spot and a photoshoot location. see more submissions by our readers here, and find out how to upload your own project here.
