SHIGERU BAN BUILDS ONE OF JAPAN'S LARGEST THATCHED ROOFS

a giant thatched roof tops japanese architect shigeru ban's eco-friendly farmer's restaurant in awaji city. one of the largest of its kind in the country, the roof is supported by a grid-like skeleton made of cardboard tubes and bamboo. the thatched roof, a common feature of traditional japanese farmhouses, is reinterpreted here with as a modern twist to the traditional craft, forming a restaurant space that reflects the vernacular architecture.
