The Russian invasion of Ukraine has grain prices on a roller coaster, and fertilizer and fuel prices rising. That's creating financial uncertainty for farmers. Today is the deadline for farmers to sign up for federal crop protection programs. Despite the economic uncertainty, many Minnesota farmers are sticking with their planting plans in what’s expected to be a profitable year. "This is a second year now I've done the budgets in this time of year where the prices are above our costs, which hasn't happened the previous five years,” says David Bau with the University of Minnesota Extension Service in Worthington, who helps farmers in southwestern Minnesota develop their budgets. “So that's a positive we have right now even with the higher input costs, our grain prices are at such a high level we can cover those expenses."
