Law enforcement canine handlers and their four-legged partners have an extraordinary relationship. They work together in the "trenches" daily, performing a wide variety of specialized and dangerous tasks. From narcotics and explosives detection to search and rescue; from locating missing people to hunting down "bad guys," canine teams are phenomenal in their commitment to the job and to one another. All canine partners live with their human counterparts and at home they are considered both a family pet and a working member of the household.

A twenty-eight year, award-winning veteran of his police department, my husband Mike was himself a canine handler for fourteen of his twenty-eight years on duty. His first canine partner was "Konny," a German Shepherd who was tragically beaten to death with a lead pipe during an off-lead search, by a robbery suspect who was hiding in an abandoned warehouse. After receiving wide media coverage, enough money was donated to the police department to be able to replace Konny with "Vasko," another German Shepherd who could only be described as one big squishy cuddle-lump.
