Determining NPDB reportable actions

Hospitals must know what events are reportable to the NPDB. Sometimes the answer is clear cut; sometimes it is not. Recent changes to the NPDB Guidebook have also effected when hospitals must report actions taken against a physician. This figure provides some examples of what types of action must be reported.

Clinical Privilege White Paper: Child Neurology

According to the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), child neurologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of neurologic disorders of the neonatal period, infancy, early childhood, and adolescence. These physicians have a firm grasp of general neurology, which involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases or impaired function of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles, autonomic nervous system, and blood vessels that relate to these structures.

Understanding the unified medical staff

Since the 20th century, the organized medical staff has been a basic requirement for all hospitals. In 2014, CMS revised its CoPs to address an evolving trend across multiple hospitals in a health system: the unification of medical staffs. However, this revision came after the National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) voiced concerns about several CMS proposed rules in 2013, particularly one concerning the organized medical staff.
