More than 15 percent of Maine’s workforce has filed for unemployment during the last six weeks due to the economic slowdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Maine Department of Labor has determined that because Whitcraft Group owned the facility for less than three years, the company is not required to follow state labor law regarding severance pay.
Gov. Janet Mills on Wednesday hinted that she may consider reopening the state’s economy on a regional basis and relaxing restrictions on lodging and outdoor dining that have been heavily criticized by the hospitality industry.
Maine has greatly increased its capacity to handle unemployment calls since mid-March and plans to hire more workers, but it can still handle only 1,800 of the roughly 50,000 calls it gets daily as the coronavirus places unprecedented stress on the system
