Developing a resident disciplinary policy

Residency Program Alert, June 28, 2018

“It is inevitable that a program director will have to address the issue of a resident who is having difficulties performing the expected duties of a physician-in-training. Resident deficiencies may involve any one of the six competencies of the ACGME: patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practice.

Early identification of residents who are struggling is a priority, as it is important for the success of the resident and the safety of patients. Early and frequent formative feedback to the resident should be delivered and documented for future reference for the clinical competency committee, especially if the program director has to build a case for disciplinary action against the resident.”
