Remembrance Day services: Communities across the Hunter paused to mark Remembrance Day on Monday. Local veteran Robert Hicks OAM (pictured above) has served and volunteered in a number of ways in the Australian Army since 1959. He attended a Remembrance Day ceremony in Newcastle's Civic Park and says it is important to pay respects to all those who have served, and especially those who have given their lives in service.

Appeal dismissed in murder case: A driver who ran down a man in his car at the Cessnock tip has lost an appeal against a 24-year jail term for murder.The Supreme Court heard 34-year-old Adam Bidner struck Shane Mears with a four-wheel drive in July 2020. Bidner appealed his 24-year maximum jail term, but the appeal was dismissed by the court of criminal appeal on Monday.
Local whooping cough cases: NSW Health says whooping cough cases are still high across the state, but remain stable. In October the Hunter New England Health district recorded 445 cases, down from 540 in September. So far in November, 17 cases have been recorded. The latest NSW Health Respiratory Report also says COVID-19 and influenza activity remain stable and at low levels.
Dredging money: Days after $10 million in federal government funding for a permanent dredge at Swansea Channel was announced, the state government has committed an additional $6 million towards the project. Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley says Lake Macquarie is often under-utilised by boat owners because of concerns about the depth of the waterway's entrance.
Local cricketer's hopes for World Cup: Veteran Newcastle cricketer Steve Mace is hoping to represent Australia at the Over-50s Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka next year after helping New South Wales finish runner-up at the national titles this week. NSW lost the tournament decider against Victoria at Newcastle's Number 1 Sportsground. Mace has represented Australia numerous times at over-50s level and says winning a World Cup would be a career highlight.
Three Knights on Golden Boot longlist: Three Newcastle Knights women's players have been included on the longlist for the prestigious Golden Boot award. The award, commissioned by International Rugby League, honours the best global player at the end of the year. Yasmin Clydsdale and Tamika Upton have been nominated for Australia, while Evah McEwan has been named as one of Samoa's nominees. The winner will be announced in early December.
Jets losses: The Newcastle Jets men's and women's sides both copped losses last week. The men's team lost 4-1 to Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday in Parramatta, while the women lost 3-2 to home-team Perth Glory on Sunday. Both teams' coaches said their squads will regroup and reset before this week's clashes.
