Good morning, and welcome to the October 3 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter. It wasn't fun watching the Saints offense take the field Sunday, and it was even less fun going back through the muck Monday morning. After four weeks, the Saints are 2-2, and progressively getting worse offensively. Not just the OCA lot of the attention following Sunday's 26-9 loss to Tampa Bay was centered on longtime offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, but as our columnist Jeff Duncan points out, a play caller is only as good as his quarterback. New Orleans invested a serious amount in Derek Carr this offseason in the hopes that he would elevate their offense to a new level. Through four games, Duncan wrote, "the inconvenient truth about the Saints offense is this: Derek Carr needs to play better. A lot better." More here from Duncan on the struggles from the Saints most important player. No changes imminentSpeaking of Carmichael, it doesn't sound like the Saints are planning to make any coaching staff changes any time soon. Addressing the media Monday afternoon, coach Dennis Allen reiterated the same point he made late Sunday: He's going to avoid making an in-season change at all costs. "I’ve never seen that to be the right answer, particularly when we’re four games in," Allen said. "And yet we have to be better. I understand everyone’s frustration because everyone in the building feels it." Yuck Point OhThe numbers, unsurprisingly, are not good. The basic counting stats: Bad. The more advanced analytics: Also bad. The historical numbers: Buddy, you don't really want to go there. Zach Ewing took a dive through it all and hand picked the numbers that truly illustrate how ineffective New Orleans has been with the ball in its hands this season. It's worth your time to simply give things the proper perspective. It is a long season. We'll see if the Saints can figure something out, and we'll be there covering them along the way.
