#1 DirecTV Now Launches on Roku
Roku announced the early release of a new DirecTV Now app on select devices along with a one-month free trial for customers who dont already get the OTT service.
WHY THIS MATTERS: The long-anticipated debut of DirecTV Now on Rokus popular platform comes roughly six months after the service launched in late-November 2016. #2 Analyst: Cable Universe Continues to Decay
According to an analysis of the latest Nielsen data by Brian Wieser of Pivotal Research Group, the number of pay-TV households continues to fall. Wieser says that Nielsen estimates of the cable universe for June shows a decline of 2.9%, a drop that comes despite a 1.7% increase in total TV households. That total includes only traditional cable, satellite and telco subscribers.
WHY THIS MATTERS: The cable universe numbers are studied for clues about the health of the pay TV business, which has been under pressure from cord cutters looking to save money by dropping their subscriptions and younger cord-never consumers.

Quote Of The Day

We see ATSC 3.0 as a bridge to what we have consistently pointed to as a mobile first opportunity for broadcasting. Its the mobile side [of the standard] that we see the most potential in, and its the mobile side that we are going to explore intensely Mobile, we believe, will become the economic enabler for massive investment in television... Our vision of a mobile first future is in taking advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity with a repack and major recapitalization in the industry to move in this direction.
