He was named "David Letterman" by the teenage son of the first family that owned him. And like David Letterman, he was a rogue through-and-through, a rogue in a tuxedo — all black with a white beard and a white ruff at his neck. When he ate spaghetti, his beard would turn orange. I was told there were ten puppies in his litter, and they all looked alike, except Dave.

We lived down the street from his original family. The children were away at college and returned only sporadically, so the mother had given her blessing for Dave to come and live with us. My brother and I were in elementary school, and we couldn't wait to get home every day to play with Dave. But Dave always knew when his first family's son was home on a break from school, and he would run away from our house and drop by for a weekend visit with them. We speculated on how he knew the son was home. Could he distinguish among the sounds of different car engines? (Keep reading)
