Welcome to your summer Early Detection and Diagnosis newsletter. I hope you’re enjoying the summertime, whether it’s an opportunity to travel, relax with family, or sneak in a few quiet hours in the lab.
Our work at Cancer Research UK continues to be busy. We recently launched our new Research Data Strategy, that you can read more about below. Early detection and diagnosis researchers already know the vast potential that can be unlocked from a wide array of data modalities. We are keen to better enable and harness these capabilities to use data to their maximum effect to benefit the lives of patients and the public.
We are eager to see many of you in-person at the Early Detection of Cancer Conference in Portland in October. The speaker line-up this year is excellent, featuring many outstanding researchers and early detection leaders from around the world. I would encourage you to take up our current offers of discounted registration for UK researchers and the opportunity for bursary support for early career researchers presenting abstracts at this year’s meeting.
Finally, I’d like to congratulate Rebecca Fitzgerald, last year’s Don Listwin Award winner, for her recent appointment as the inaugural Director of the new Early Cancer Institute in Cambridge. This new research enterprise will draw together basic and applied scientists working to understand the earliest steps of cancer formation.

This month, we published our first Research Data Strategy, setting out how we will scale up our existing activity and unleash the enormous potential of big data.
In our strategy, we lay out a set of foundations we’ll build from to enable cancer researchers in the UK to better generate, curate and use data to accelerate insights that will lead to improved patient outcomes. |

Our Cancer Tech Accelerator is back, giving you the opportunity to learn the entrepreneurial and technical skills to translate your innovations into a startup in data, MedTech or AI.
The 6 strongest teams will be awarded £70,000, alongside 6 months of tailored mentoring to develop and validate your idea and help you form an investor-ready startup. You don't have to be funded by Cancer Research UK to apply. Applications close on 15 September. |

| TOP TIPS FOR IMPROVING PATIENT AND PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IN YOUR APPLICATIONS Project and Programme Award applications to our Early Detection and Diagnosis Research Committee are also reviewed by our new Patient and Public Review Panel, who comment on the relevance and impact of the proposed work for people with cancer and the general population. Following our first meeting with the Panel last April, we asked members for their top tips for how researchers can strengthen these aspects of their applications. |
